Besides "pasty.com" appearing on today's pictures, what other establishment is advertising pasties, in which year?

By Cindy, New Baltimore, MI (Cindy) on Monday, December 12, 2011 - 06:49 am:

Kaleva Bakery. Good morning!
First Post

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Monday, December 12, 2011 - 06:58 am:

Good Monday Morning!!

That would be the Kaleva Cafe in 2008.
Second Post

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Monday, December 12, 2011 - 07:48 am:

The Kaleva is such a nice little restaurant! And yup, 2008! Can't say I've had a pasty there, though.

Well, have a good week, everybody!

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Monday, December 12, 2011 - 07:55 am:

Good review, as usual. I see this one got posted before I was up this morning.

By Cindy, New Baltimore, MI (Cindy) on Monday, December 12, 2011 - 08:26 am:

Capt. Paul, You are right. I was so excited to be the first one on today, I forgot to put the year. Since it's the Christmas Season, I'll be happy to share my bird with you. Notice, I didn't say GIVE. You only get HALF!!! lol

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Monday, December 12, 2011 - 08:56 am:

Even though the question reads "what other establishment is advertising pasties, in which year?, that's ok; I have got so many Birds over the years I don't mind sharing a few.... J

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Monday, December 12, 2011 - 09:09 am:

I read that congress recently lifted a 5 year ban on funding horse meat inspections (sorry JT). I think an "Early Horse" award may be in the future with a Half-Horse and Quarter-Horse award, as well.

By FJL (Langoman) on Monday, December 12, 2011 - 09:37 am:

I think Alex should stop horsing around and the capt. awarded the 'Humble pie,' man of the year..........:)

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Monday, December 12, 2011 - 09:40 am:

It would be my luck I know what quarter of the horse I'd end up with.... ;-)

By Mary Drew at Pasty Central (Mdrew) on Monday, December 12, 2011 - 10:47 am:

Paul Roberts (Grizzly Adams) asked me to post the following for him:

Quote:

I'm reading Karl Bohnak's book "So Cold A Sky". Good stuff! If you haven't read it you should. I've come across something of interest that I don't think I've ever seen on the Pasty Cam but that certainly should be. I know why it hasn't. It's in MN. It would be the spot where Baraga landed. He and a French voyager went across in a canoe (70 miles!) There is a cross marking it in Schroeder, MN. That said, he was on one of the Apostle Islands when he left so I'm wondering if there's a spot on this end that marks the starting point.

Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Monday, December 12, 2011 - 01:27 pm:

Actually I am in favor of the horse slaughter coming back. It's a humane way of relieving a horse that is abused, neglected, not wanted, sick, and every other measure of neglect. However anyone trying to conduct abuse, or any other negative measures to my well loved and well cared for horses, will be *what's for supper!*

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Monday, December 12, 2011 - 02:04 pm:

Janie, my cousin in Iowa agrees with allowing horse slaughter to come back. He has a couple of very old horses who have been pets and show horses of his & his daughter and son, but they are now really old and lame. There is no procedure to "put them to sleep", to put them out of their misery, at least that I've heard of, unlike there is for small animals. What's more, we occasionally hear here in the lower peninsula of cases of people who can no longer afford to feed or otherwise care for their horses. People can't sell horses because horses are way too expensive to care for. A while back, there was a real tragedy in Illinois, I think it was, where a family could no longer care for its draft horses, and no one would buy them or even take them for free. Wasn't Bo Derek out campaigning a while back to allow for this, as the only humane way?

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Monday, December 12, 2011 - 02:14 pm:

If you have seen the horses that go to *kill pens* you would have to be pretty darn hungry or not picky to even think of a horse burger. It's a merciful death for these horses/ponies There are the same measures to put a horse down as dogs and cats. I have a horse cemetery on our farm. None of my horses ever leave home.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Monday, December 12, 2011 - 03:10 pm:

Janie, I'm in total agreement with you about the humane method of 'putting a horse down', those beautiful creatures should not be left to starve and/or otherwise ignored. I put them in the same category as any domesticated animal. They give us warmth and pleasure, we owe them something in return!
Mary, that book that 'GrizzlyAdams' is reading, 'So Cold a Sky' sounds very interesting. Ask him if it's still in print.

Mary says: Yes, Shirley, 'So Cold a Sky', by Karl Bohnak, is still in print and can be ordered from Copper World in Calumet.
Here's a direct link to the book on their webpage: So Cold a Sky. It would make a wonderful Christmas present for someone that loves the U.P.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Monday, December 12, 2011 - 04:08 pm:

Janie, I think my cousin buries him on his land, too. He has a fair amount of farm land and pasture. I thought when they did do that, the horse meat went overseas, that it was not allowed to be sold here, or if it was, only in pet food?

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Monday, December 12, 2011 - 04:16 pm:

Marianne, doesn't matter where the horse meat goes or sold, it still comes from the same sickly, neglected horses.

By Hollidays (Hollybranches) on Monday, December 12, 2011 - 04:19 pm:

Horses being slaughtered makes me very sad. They need to be euthanized, like dogs and cats and then whatever happens, happens. :(

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Monday, December 12, 2011 - 04:27 pm:

That article is 6 years old and it was stopped. It has just recently been uplifted with the changes in how horses are killed. This is why I am for it. A horse is more than just a *bragging* right for owners that only like to talk about owning horses versus properly taking care of one.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Monday, December 12, 2011 - 04:36 pm:

The article as in horse slaughter was opened 6 years ago but banned after 1 year. It has just recently been lifted with changes in slaughter ways.

By Hollidays (Hollybranches) on Monday, December 12, 2011 - 04:38 pm:

So, what are the changes now Janie? Hopefully it is less painful. I really don't think there is anything more painful than sending a horse to slaughter.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Monday, December 12, 2011 - 04:38 pm:

That is so sad, but true, Janie!

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Monday, December 12, 2011 - 04:45 pm:

I have heard they are being shot with rifles by very accurate sharp shooters. They never knew what happened to them. Euthanize would be very costly. Go have a steak, that cow was slaughtered the very same way.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Monday, December 12, 2011 - 05:05 pm:

So sorry for the unpleasant pictures from this matter, but it's still a much better picture than human slaughter thanks to war, domestic abuse, drunk drivers, etc.

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Monday, December 12, 2011 - 05:10 pm:

Your right JT...My father was a meat cutter and once a month, I used to go with him to the slaughter house to pick up the beef. There was a man who would lead the cow into a tight enclosure so that it could not move and then with a 22 cal. rifle, shot it in the temple. The cow instantly dropped like a sack of bricks to the ground, dead as a door-nail. I don't know if they still do it the same way, but I never saw that man miss his mark and that was 45 years ago.

By mickill mouse (Ram4) on Monday, December 12, 2011 - 05:44 pm:

How did the comments go from what other establishment sells pasties, to the slaughter of horses? Should that be on anothe page? Just saying like other people say....;O)

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Monday, December 12, 2011 - 05:52 pm:

You missed it, go back and read Alex's earliest post...

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Monday, December 12, 2011 - 06:02 pm:

Who knows, someday horse meat pasties? Taste like chicken. :)

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Monday, December 12, 2011 - 06:34 pm:

Hey, wait a minute, it's all Capt. Paul's fault. All I want for Christmas is the Quarter-Horse award. :)

By mickill mouse (Ram4) on Monday, December 12, 2011 - 06:35 pm:

I read Alexs' posting and I still say what does pasties have to do with the slaughter of horses?

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Monday, December 12, 2011 - 06:41 pm:

ok mickill Alex mentioned horse meat inspection, in order to get horse meat, a horse needs to be slaughtered, just like to get steak, cattle must be slaughtered. This concludes our lesson for today. You all pass! LOL!

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Monday, December 12, 2011 - 06:43 pm:

Alex, it's not Capt's fault, you are taking one for the team!

By mickill mouse (Ram4) on Monday, December 12, 2011 - 07:02 pm:

I understand animals have to be slaughtered for meat. I still ask what does that have to do with Kaleava Cafe and pasties?

The slaughter of horses was not the subject.

By mickill mouse (Ram4) on Monday, December 12, 2011 - 07:17 pm:

I will take one 'for the team' too, but, I will still stand up for what I believe in.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Monday, December 12, 2011 - 07:52 pm:

Sheesh.... I leave for 10 hours working and look what happens....
What did I do now????

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Monday, December 12, 2011 - 09:00 pm:

Shhhhhh.....okay, children, that's enough, get back to your schoolwork.:D
Capt., you have to stay after school and clean the blackboard!
