Good morning friends. We woke up this morning in Spearfish, SD. What do you know? They are on Mountain Time here, not Central :o)

It's a wet dreary day here in SE-MI and this photo is just what I needed.

I agree with you, Alex, on that desktop picture! That was my desktop picture for a long time. I'm back to my picture that I took of the Tetons a while back, at the moment, though. It's a wet, dreary day here in mid-Michigan, as well as up in Copper Country (per the web cams), too.

Another great selection of photos.

By Helen in the U. P.! (Lahelo) on Friday, October 14, 2011 - 03:13 pm:

More awesome pictures of the U.P. Getting alot of wind and rain today. Everyone stay warm and dry. Got a fire in the woodstove going. Warming up a bit in the house.
Zman we need more pictures!

By Helen in the U. P.! (Lahelo) on Friday, October 14, 2011 - 03:15 pm:

Thank you for the link of the beautiful scene Alex! Appreciate it on a day like today! Next summer is not too far off in the future.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Friday, October 14, 2011 - 03:45 pm:

The Dr. and I experienced the rain/wind firsthand; we've been down at Calumet Waterworks watching the waves come in. What a nice change from 100+ degree heat in Texas all summer. The Dr. has had a huge smile on her face all day because she loves this time of year in the Keweenaw.

Currently, we're having fishbowels in the Ambassador (sorry Deb!!) and awaiting a pizza before heading to the Tech/Badger hockey game later this evening. Sadly, we must return south tomorrow.....

By Hollidays (Hollybranches) on Friday, October 14, 2011 - 04:13 pm:

Yep, Helen, the winds are wicked today. Got a fire going in the wood stove too.

So sad to see the paper mill in Ontonagon being taken down. All of those people that have worked there, with nothing now, have to be crying everytime they pass the plant.

This tiny village continues to stay tough and so do the people.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Friday, October 14, 2011 - 04:13 pm:

There was a fatal accident on the Big Mac Bridge this afternoon, that shut down the whole bridge for a while, while the Michigan State Police investigated it. A semi crossed the center line, running into a car. That's really sad. I don't remember hearing of an accident like that before, but maybe that's what the wind escorts are for?

By Hollidays (Hollybranches) on Friday, October 14, 2011 - 04:39 pm:

Song lyrics for the day, that wind, weather and anything else will never let me back down;

Well I won't back down
No I won't back down
You can stand me up at the gates of ••••
But I won't back down

No I'll stand my ground, won't be turned around
And I'll keep this world from draggin me down
gonna stand my ground
... and I won't back down

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Friday, October 14, 2011 - 05:10 pm:

Capt...fishbowels? I'm afraid to ask, but what toppings did you get on the pizza? :)

Also waxing lyrical:
Leaves are falling all around, it's time I was on my way.
Thanks to you, I'm much obliged for such a pleasant stay.
But now it's time for me to go. The autumn moon lights my way.
For now I smell the rain, and with it pain, and it's headed my way.
Sometimes I grow so tired, but I know I've got one thing I got to do...???

Marianne, have your heard of the 1987 accident where a woman was killed when her car was blown off the bridge. She was driving a Yugo.

By Carole (Carole) on Friday, October 14, 2011 - 06:39 pm:

Thr are still lined up on the bridge as far as you can see. So sad to hear that someone was killed.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Friday, October 14, 2011 - 07:35 pm:

Judy, I do remember both accidents, actually. I was thinking that the Yugo was a suicide, too, but apparently not, according to your link. I should have said that I don't remember another fatal accident that involved a second vehicle.

That had to have been very scary for anyone who was around to see it. They're now saying that the fatality was the driver of the semi, who apparently died of a medical condition.

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Friday, October 14, 2011 - 08:48 pm:

JH: just wanted to let you know it was 1989 that the Yugo went off The Bridge, and the woman's name was Leslie Pluhar.

By JH (Thumbgardener) on Friday, October 14, 2011 - 09:07 pm:

Thank you, Thomas, I just realized that after reading more on it. It happened September 22, 1989 and she was driving a 1987 Yugo. According to an article I just read she was on her way to meet her boyfriend in St. Ignace.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Friday, October 14, 2011 - 09:52 pm:

Lol, oops!!! I meant fishbowls; yikes, didn't mean to scare anyone......

And, those Husky Dawgs played a heck of a game tonight and beat the Badgers 2-1 in OT. If they can play every game like the one tonight, what a season they'll have!!

By Dunerat (Dunerat) on Friday, October 14, 2011 - 11:03 pm:

Big air out here on the dune tonight, spittin' a little rain at the windows. It's blowing about 20 out of the northwest now, supposed to rise to about 30 and stay that way through the day tomorrow. I see it's supposed to be about 10 mph higher wind in Eagle Harbor. Waves are breaking on the third reef out tonight, and I'll bet by tomorrow morning there will be whitewater on the fourth reef. The wind is making a lot more noise than our usual fall storms, because we have most of the leaves still on the trees here. The wind is making a little buffeting noise on the house, but the frame isn't shaking like it will in more air. There was a nice green flash at sunset.

The pier lights at Muskegon and Grand Haven are glowing through the occasional curtain of light rain out there in the dark. The flashers on the databuoys straight offshore of us are glimmering irregularly, which is what you'd expect to see with this kind of swell running. No lights anywhere farther out, which is good, because anything else out there would be a lake boat. Stay safe, all mariners. Good night and may God bless all.

Fish bowels vs. fish bowls?
Aw Capt. Paul (Eclogite), you had me going on that one … I thought perhaps fish "bowels" were the marine equivalent of haggis! Ewww!
