In which year did we note a memorial for Dan Urbanski?

By Diana P. (Diana) on Wednesday, August 17, 2011 - 08:03 am:

Good Morning! 2004. My message on the other page was written on the What's UP page, but it apparently switched to the main page while Charlie was uploading the slide show, or something. Sorry about that.

Good enough for a bird.

Only a few more days in Yooperland. The weather has been grand! But wait, don't despair, there's hope in the air, with fall colors I return, free from care. (OK, I didn't claim to be a poet but the the U.P. has me feeling like one!)

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Wednesday, August 17, 2011 - 08:50 am:

Congrats Nancy; you're a poet and didn't even know it!! Actually, you are very close to having a limerick written.

We too will return to the Keweenaw this fall, but by then I'm guessing most of the colour will be gone. Still, we will take in a Husky hockey game in October which will make the trip from the Twin Cities worth it.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Wednesday, August 17, 2011 - 08:57 am:

Capt...will you and the Dr. be traveling I-380 N. through Cedar Rapids, Ia. en-route to the Twin Cities?

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Wednesday, August 17, 2011 - 09:00 am:

Probably not, I-35 would be the best route...just wishful thinking if you two came through Cedar Rapids, maybe a chance to meet you.....

By Donna (Donna) on Wednesday, August 17, 2011 - 09:31 am:

I still say..God's got some great photography now!

How's Uncle Chuck? Anyone hear??

By Dale Beitz (Dbeitz) on Wednesday, August 17, 2011 - 09:32 am:

Most of the limericks I know mention the town of Nantucket. But the following "poems" are two of my Dad's favorites:

The shortest poem in the world, titled "Fleas" : Adam had'em.

The Unknown Poet: He was a poet, and didn't know it. But his feet showed it, since they were such Longfellows.

(let the groaning begin)

As a rule man's a fool.
When it's hot he wants it cool.
When it'd cool he wants it hot.
He always wants it what it's not.

Ms.Donna, Doing well thanks, all fluids Monday and Tuesday weren't much fun, lol. Today I get on to soft foods for the rest of the week, Im starving too! Thanks for the concern.

Capt.- NMU doesn't join the WCHA until 2012/2013 season, right?

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Wednesday, August 17, 2011 - 11:11 am:

Unfortunately Janie, we do cruise on up 35 all the way to the Cities which takes us through central Iowa. Maybe someday we'll slip over to Cedar Rapids for a visit.....

And, for a great example of a limerick:

I am from a place called the Keweenaw
It is a land of wonder and awe
It has copper and datolite
Silver and prehnite
No one has yet to find a flaw

We did an entire thread on Mindat concerning earth science themed limericks..... do I sense a new page on the "Other Topics" forum on Pasty???

By Uncle Chuck (Unclechuck) on Wednesday, August 17, 2011 - 11:19 am:

Another great review today! Gosh I miss the Keweenaw!

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Wednesday, August 17, 2011 - 12:51 pm:

Capt. Paul (Eclogite):

Silver and prehnite

Now I certainly am no expert on limericks, but it seems to me that just a few wee tweaks to the above (merely adjusting a few syllables) would make it fit the requisite (anapestic?) meter more accurately, to wit:

Quote:

I'm from a place called the Keweenaw
A land of wonder and awe
With copper and datolite
Silver and prehnite
No one has yet found a flaw

What'cha 'tink, eh? Yes? No?
(Perhaps the first line still doesn't quite fit the meter?)

Anyone want ta try Finnish limericks? That should be a challenge! <grin>

I THINK THOSE ARE PIRATES INVADING THE COPPER COUNTRY TO STEAL OUR COPPER AT THE MUSEUMS.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, August 17, 2011 - 09:41 pm:

Maybe shorten it a bit to::

I'm from a place called Keweenaw???????

I think that would meet the criteria quite nicely and the rest is good FRNash!!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, August 17, 2011 - 09:42 pm:

And maybe: It's a land of wonder and awe!!

Sorry:(

Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) & maija in Commerce Township (Maija):
Good work, y'all!

The first line still seems a bit of a challenge, though. — But I'm no expert.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Friday, August 19, 2011 - 10:32 pm:

I really like it as "I'm from a place called Keweenaw". I think it sounds good as a first line. And maija, that was great too. That was fun:)
