For those who have looked in on the Pasty Cam these past 14 years, you know this daily 'glimpse of life from the U.P.' originates in Eagle River, Michigan, the county seat of Keweenaw County. We don't have a large population, so when one of our residents reaches the Century mark, it's pretty big news. Today Pauline Steck celebrates that milestone.

Pauline was a popular school teacher at Calumet High School, spanning a couple of generations. She was married to legendary artist Alden Steck at the Phoenix Church 70 years ago next month. Edie and I met Pauline when we moved here 23 years ago, and have always been inspired by her energy and enthusiasm.

Happy Birthday, Mrs. Steck, and we'll see you at the Open House in Calumet this afternoon :o)

Happy 100th Birthday, Mrs. Steck! That's an awesome milestone to make! You look wonderful! :-)

Happy Birthday, Mrs. Steck. I'll echo what Marianne said!! It wasn't all that long ago that my Aunt Frieda Guilbault Durocher turned 100. I remember how happy she was that day! She, too, looked awesome. I really miss her :( Hope you have a wonderful birthday!!

Wow! Pauline is an inspiration that age is only a number! Happy 100th Young Birthday!

From the candles, it appears the picture was taken last year on this day.

Correct. Maybe we'll have a candle update later today.

Mrs. Steck looks lovely. Our family has enjoyed many moments
admiring one of Mr. Alden Steck's pictures of a wintry Eagle River
that my parents purchased many years ago. Happy Birthday, Mrs.
Steck!

It just goes to show you what breathing the purest, most vitalizing air in the world, will do for you! I wish you many more birthdays, Mrs. Steck!

Happy Birthday Mrs Steck. I'd love to hear some of the stories you could tell of the olden days. I'm sure they would be very interesting.I hope you have a wonderful day & live to enjoy many more birthdays. God bless you with good health & more happiness.

By FRNash/PHX, AZ (Frnash) on Thursday, May 12, 2011 - 04:46 pm:

Well, congratulations to Mrs. Steck on this momentous occasion!
And doesn't she look fabulous! — Not a day over 60!

It sure does seem that there have long been, and still remain an extraordinary number of centenarians or near-centenarians in "da Copper Country".

What is it, somethin' in da water? Or perhaps as noted above, it really is due to that "Purest, most vitalizing air on Earth".

My maternal grandmother too, Anna Nara (nee Karvola) of Bruce Crossing, MI, who passed away on October 17, 1986, just 40 days short of her 100th birthday!

Another "Happy Birthday" greeting sent to you, Mrs. Steck! Judging from the glowing comments posted here about your personal and professional life, you are a special and very loved lady, and most certainly were a caring and gifted teacher (inspirational in Latin class ... now that's quite an accomplishment, too!). Happy 100th Birthday!! ;-)

Happy, happy 100th year of your appreciated life, Mrs. Steck. I have always considered you a favorite teacher and of the best that Calumet High School has ever had on staff. I learned well in your class; you taught so that one who paid attention really understood the lesson. You look wonderful; and what a lovely bride you made on your wedding day!
