Last week we took a stroll along the waterfront in Houghton. Well, we're back there today, only this time we're gazing across the canal at scenes in Ripley, thanks to Krista Chamberlain. This mini-tour starts with one of the weathered old mining buildings and the old Ripley School tower, visible behind it. Maybe it's the angle of the shot, but in previous photos I've seen of this very same scene, I've never noticed that enclosed stairway coming down the side of this building. It's standing out in this one.

Then some of the more colorful remnants of the mining days, with one of the ski hill runs sporting just a small patch of snow remaining. Krista's third shot had me stumped for a short time, as I couldn't place where it was or what buildings were represented, but then I realized those were the marina docks out in front of the Houghton County Road Commission Office (Hi Pam!). Again, I think it's the different angle that threw me off at first.

And lastly, we're looking at the chair lift section of Mount Ripley and you can see, as of this past Monday, there were still a few patches of snow hanging onto the side of the hill. The snow guns are put away for another season.

It's nice to stop and take a good look at the history that's right under our nose every day. Thanks Krista, for letting us join you on your photo journey along the Ripley waterfront.

While straightening out My Gram's genealogy records, I found her contract to teach at the Ripley School in the early 1920's. She rode the trolley car to and from Calumet every day. Also have some of her mementos from Marquette Normal teaching program.

Liz,That's really neat that you were able to find those things of your Grandmothers. They are things you'll alwyas treasure. It's not easy finding out things about your ancestors that's for sure.
