A follow up to yesterday's question: Where is the Keweenaw Lion's Spaghetti Dinner this Sunday, and how often does the even take place?

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Thursday, April 28, 2011 - 08:02 am:

There's the pictures!! So many cool ones today. Love Joyce's cat peeking around the tree trunk. And when did they put an observation booth on Brockway?? The Hungarian Falls look beautiful!!!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Thursday, April 28, 2011 - 08:05 am:

You could try, Charlie! But I'm kind of computer illiterate :)

By Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Thursday, April 28, 2011 - 08:07 am:

It just so happens, I published today's Pasty Cam sitting in my car up here on the top of Brockway, and I'm looking at that observation booth. It has been here several years.

I had to come up at about 3am, when a remote upgrade of our wireless relay here went bad. Spent a couple of hours to restore operation, which delivers broadband to Copper Harbor, Eagle Harbor, Eagle River and 5 mile point. I think I'll head home and get some sleep.

By Donna (Donna) on Thursday, April 28, 2011 - 08:42 am:

In my next life...I really wanna be one of Joyce's pets.

(And Deb..see what computer literacy does for ya? Up on top of the Mountain at 3am!) Seriously...thank you Charlie!

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Thursday, April 28, 2011 - 08:58 am:

Don't let Charlie fool you; he was up on Brockway watching the sunrise with a good cup of morning coffee.... ;-)

I'm sure all of the Keweenaw appreciates your 3 am sacrifice to keep things up and running.

Today is Workers' Memorial Day, a day to honor all workers, like Copper Country miners and mariners on the great lakes, who lost their lives or were injured on the job.

That fellow with the morel remindes me of my recently deceased sil. That boy was raised in the valleys and cliffs along the river. Knew where to find those morels. Hhhmmm good.

By sometimesyooper (Nancyd) on Thursday, April 28, 2011 - 01:17 pm:

I remember playing on the "Hancock stairs" as a child. Even then I wondered why they were there - they are sort of "stairs to no where". Of course they lead from the north end of the bridge to the middle of the East Hancock neighborhood but it doesn't seem like a logical place to put such a beautiful, fancy staircase. Does anyone know why they are there?

By Richard Wieber (Dickingrayling) on Thursday, April 28, 2011 - 03:22 pm:

Nancyd---I'm just guessing, but I think they were built during the WPA days. A nimber of projects were done then. Think the stone "ships" we see around the CC were also built by WPA. Those stairs were one of my favorite places when I was growing up in the 30s and 40s. Every Saturday a bunch of us kids went to the movie where the "Pic" stood. We lived in east Houghton and would run, almost non stop, all the way to the movie. Usually running up past dave's (formerly Bruno's) but ran down the stairs on the way back. Oh, to be 14 yrs. old again.

If anyone can watch TV6 tonight, there is wild boar hunting going on. I'd rather watch that than the royal wedding. :)
