I heard something quite interesting this morning on the news coming to work. The federal government is talking about expanding the interstate highway system to more remote parts of the country. One of the proposed new freeways that is gaining popularity in D.C. cuts across the Upper Peninsula starting just south of the Soo on I-75 and extending across just south of Marquette, through Ironwood to near Duluth and on to I-94 in Minnesota. Some of the other places included central Nevada between Vegas and Reno, and I thought they mentioned something about bringing I-39 north from Wausau up into the UP near Lake Gogebic as well. I thought it was just neat that the UP made the national news today. If I can find a news story link, I’ll post it here later today....

Capt. Paul, I heard that same report this morning. Seems like great news but you must have been so giddy with the UP connection that you missed the part about the variable rate toll based on weight, carbon footprint and ability to pay. Not sure how this will help create private growth in the remote areas of the country. I’m certain that it will create some government jobs to manage access to the new highway, though.

Capt. Paul About 1963 I was working highway construction in Michigan. That same route was discussed then. I became a joke amoung the workers that ever time that road was suggested the politicians would get involved and the final plan was to spend a little more money fixing up US-2. And that was where it ended.dickingrayling

So, Captain Paul, time to play the song; "On The Road Again"?

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Friday, April 1, 2011 - 05:54 pm:

Aww, gee, I was just thinking perhaps these new highways to be built would have been useful for the huge herd of moose to make their travels from Wis. to the U.P.

I was thinking quietly to myself that April Fool's Day was a crazy day for a serious announcement, so I didn't believe it from the beginning, Capt Paul, LOL.
