We're up above Eagle River today, courtesy of E. Neil Harri, who sent these photos to make sure that Charlie and Edie didn't get too homesick while they were out west celebrating the birth of their second granddaughter. I know they're actually on their way home right now, but not knowing their ETA, I figured perhaps a couple shots of the town would help guide them back safe and sound. It's always nice to go for a visit somewhere else, but it's even better to get back home - especially when home is a small Keweenaw town where everybody knows your name. Welcome back to "someplace special", Charlie and Edie.

Eagle River may be just a small little community, but it certainly has its share of interesting places to stop and check out if you're traveling through. For information on the Points of Interest in this summer resort area, see Hunt's Guide to Eagle River.

Thanks Neil and Mary for a glimpse of home. Actually we are back in southern Michigan, spending the night in Concord with family. Both Edie and I grew up in the southeastern part of the state, and were introduced to the U.P. back in the 60's by way of a big yellow bus our youth group sent to Gitche Gumee each summer. You can see the Camp's baseball and soccer field, that big clearing in the lower part of today's second photo.

If you're new to Pasty Central and would like to see more aerial photos from Neil Harri, there's quite a selection at his website.

I always thought the Lighthouse in Eagle River would make Bob and I a nice home. It is privately owned isn't it?

I can see the house we use to live in. Yes, I wish I was still there!!

Nice photos...can't wait to cruise that road in the summer.

Since myself & many other trollpersons (many that I talked to & had voting for the CCHS in the last Animal Rescue Site Shelter Challenge Contest), helped you enormously in getting you the big $ win, I think it's time for the UP & LP to come together and vote for one in the LP this time because we're just as needy, please. How about the Mecosta County Animal Rescue? Any other LP suggestions?
Thank you

"Trollperson", I like your idea.....seems fair to me and I'll make a note of the Mecosta Co. shelter. Afterall, doggies and catties everywhere need our help and love!:)

What is that running out into the lake in the top photo. It looks like Eagle River struck oil.
It looks like it is running north on the shore.

Roll on the 21st September, when I shall be visiting Jack and Carol Treganowan at The Old Store in Eagle River...........this time without the amazing Holman Climax Male Voice Choir.

Must get stuck into some Thimbleberry Jam, Jack and Carol's wonderful ice cream, and best of all those salmon in Lake Superior.

It's worth all the travel hassle from Cornwall, just to get back to the Keweenaw.

It won't have affected you folks, but air travel over here has been seriously disrupted by ash from a volcano in Iceland..........I hope it clears by the end of September......last time it billowed out ash for over a year!!!!!

Eugene --

The dark color of the water is caused by tannins, natural organic materials that result from the decay of vegetation. Tannins are common in surface water in areas where forests cover rocky terrain.

Thank you for the beautiful photos, Neil! I found my college (Northern Michigan) suitemate's house; she and her husband live across the street from the courthouse (I can see their house actually better in the 2nd photo.). They are both yoopers and were able retire back home in the UP after working many years downstate. Hopefully I can get back to see them this year! Great people!!

Looks serene + peaceful.

I live in the L.P. and I myself am still voting for CCHS. Our shelter is very expensive to adopt any animal(which I know it's not the animals fault) and they do euthanize animals after a period of time and CCHS doesn't, plus we have adopted a cat and a dog from CCHS in the past.
Nice pictures Neil!! We are coming U.P. soon, can't wait!!

By Yooperguide (Huntandfish) on Wednesday, May 19, 2010 - 05:15 pm:

Wish you would decide to vote for the Ontonagon County Animal Protection shelter. The CCHS has already been awarded funds. Please help Ontonagon, it's a small, struggling town and they do not put the animals "down" unless it's a health issue.

Here's the link to the shelter again;

Thank you.

I voted for Ontonagon. Seems like the right thing to do.

By Phil Kuusisto (Pkuusisto) on Wednesday, May 19, 2010 - 07:38 pm:

There is a new shelter challenge. Please vote for the Copper Country Humane Society. Here is the link to the site.

I think we need to vote for a different animal shelter this time because so MANY are needy - CCHS won a lot of money in the last challenge and it's time to spread the wealth to others in Michigan who need just as much help. Agreed? Thank you for thinking about it.

By Art Brabbs (Transplant1977) on Thursday, May 20, 2010 - 06:19 am:

Please consider voting for the Marquette County Animal Shelter, they also do great work and need our support.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Thursday, May 20, 2010 - 06:51 am:

I would think because the CCHS has aready won, they would be out of this running allowing other shelters an opportunity. Share the wealth.
