Frederic W. Koski captured some tough little birds that don't go south for the winter. These feathered friends stick it out here UP North and anyone who is a bird watcher is glad that they do. Chickadees are amazingly tame little birds. You can get them to land in your hand and when you're out there filling the feeders they don't fly off very far away. Goldfinches are winter residents of the snowy U.P., too. They just put on their winter "coats," which aren't quite as bright as their spring and summer attire, and hunker down with the rest of us Yoopers. Even with their winter attire, these small avian critters still sport a bit of yellow all season, so there's no mistaking what kind of bird they are.

Birds at your feeder stations, can entertain you for hours with their flitting back and forth for seeds. Another great winter pastime.

Great photos Fred!

If you are interested in doing a bird count this month go to

http://www.birdsource.org/gbbc/howto.html

The Great Backyard Bird Count is an annual four-day event that engages bird watchers of all ages in counting birds to create a real-time snapshot of where the birds are across the continent and in Hawaii. Anyone can participate, from beginning bird watchers to experts. It takes as little as 15 minutes on one day, or you can count for as long as you like each day of the event. It’s free, fun, and easy—and it helps the birds.

How do birdies' little feet not freeze??

By Greta Jones (Urbanescapees) on Wednesday, February 3, 2010 - 11:21 pm:

Very nice shots of some very hardy birds. They hang out through the winter like it's no big deal. It's nice to feed them to keep them happy and well fed through the bitter cold and winds.

Brenda, Thanks for posting regards the GBBC!
If no one else had posted this I was going to. Perhaps a few days before the count one of us should repost a reminder!

Thanks for showing these and the nice comments. I always thought the chickadee should be the state bird.
