On this day a few years back, what brand of snowmobile appeared on the nose of Brockway, overlooking Copper Harbor?

Everyone imagines that he knows what is possible and what is impossible, but the whole of time and history attest our ignorance.......
Each GROUNDHOG DAY we drape new ideas over the burled and gnarly knobs on the branches of our lives.

Arctic Cat. Morning all

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Friday, January 30, 2009 - 08:00 am:

Our snowmobiles have taken us to that spot many, many times. A good pit stop.

Good morning! Fun pictures today. But I'm still sick of winter.

By Tony in Rochester, MN (Tbel) on Friday, January 30, 2009 - 08:58 am:

I was just looking at John Dee's site and thinking about how much total snow you guys might get in the U.P. this year. He has recorded 221" of snow so far this year. I took the 9yr average from his records for Feb. and March, which is about 83.4". I'm guessing that'll be a low estimate for this year, because of the mild winters recently. That puts you just over 300"(304.4). Doesn't that sound like fun? Maybe, if your lucky, you can approach the mark set in ‘78’-‘79’.

Looking at the bridge-cam picture, sure does look like the parking lot is getting smaller and smaller everytime the parking lot is plowed. Lots of snow.

By Bert Ziulkowski (Bertz2) on Friday, January 30, 2009 - 11:24 am:

Do you think it might be that the parking lot looks smaller because it's being photographed from a slightly different spot? We're not seeing any of the parking area closer to the motel. But, as far as I'm concerned, that's okay as long as we get the bridge and can tell what the weather's like. The bridge is gorgeous in my opinion. BZ

Hello!

Tony: Actually our winters have been anything but mild; Nov. '08 was 7.5 degrees below avg., Dec. was 4.3 below and for the first half of Jan. we were 7.5 degrees below avg. The last time that both Nov. and Dec. were below avg. back to back was 1984. Houghton County has been keeping records for more than 100 yrs. and last year we broke the record low temp several times in March. Seven and one-half degrees doesn't sound like a lot but it is when you consider that it's an average between the hi's and lows for the entire month.

Jarmo - beautiful pictures - love the one of the lumberjack!

By mickill mouse (Ram4) on Friday, January 30, 2009 - 01:21 pm:

It looks like the parking lot is smaller because every time they plow snow to the edges, they can pile it so far with the other snow piles.

Hope I explained it pretty good? I guess in other words, the snow piles are piling up.

By Tony in Rochester, MN (Tbel) on Friday, January 30, 2009 - 02:26 pm:

Dave: When I said "mild" I meant in terms of snowfall, however I haven't looked to confirm my suspicions. It certainly seems we've had several years up here with light snowfall (relatively speaking).

Jarmo: my thanks to you for your congratulations on our new president were deleted, so I repeat: KIITOS! Many of us here are so hopeful for this new president.

Great photos.

Judging by the webcams from Michigan Tech, it looks like a gorgeous day in the neighborhood today, albeit cold in temperature! I would love some of those wonderful, clear blue skies here in mid-Michigan, for sure!

TGIF, you all! I hope you have a good weekend!

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Friday, January 30, 2009 - 05:19 pm:

The parking lot of the Ramada (bridge cam) is getting smaller due to all the trucks and snowmobile trailers participants coming in for the John Dee Charity Ride for the Make A Wish event this weekend...Always a great turnout for a great event!!

By mickill mouse (Ram4) on Friday, January 30, 2009 - 06:44 pm:

Janie: I am having a tough time trying to express what I mean.

It is good to see the parking is 'filled' with trucks and trailers for the event. I hope they make lots of money. Going to a good cause.

Being that there is no place else to put the snow when they plow the parking lot- the snow is overflowing to the parking spots of the parking lot. Which to me makes it look smaller. Even if the parking lot was empty.

By Bert Ziulkowski (Bertz2) on Friday, January 30, 2009 - 06:55 pm:

mickill mouse: I do think you're right. Didn't they used to haul the snow off someplace in those big dump trucks (and I don't know if that's the right term or not). But anyway, where DO they put it ? Right now today, we have no snow in eastern Kansas. BZ

By mickill mouse (Ram4) on Friday, January 30, 2009 - 07:11 pm:

I do not know where they put all that snow. We have quite a bit of snow where we live. Lets just say we have had more snow this year than in the past. We live about 35 miles north of Detroit.

I am happy that you understand what I am trying to say about that parking lot. ;O)

By Pennie (Trolldiva) on Friday, January 30, 2009 - 07:38 pm:
