Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Thursday, August 28, 2008 - 07:34 am:

Whose aerial photography appears in the new 2009 Pasty Cam Color Calendar?

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Thursday, August 28, 2008 - 07:38 am:

Probably Neil Harri. On my way UP!
First Correct Post

By Smfwlk (Trollperson) on Thursday, August 28, 2008 - 07:39 am:

Neil Harri

By k j (Kathiscc) on Thursday, August 28, 2008 - 07:43 am:

Wait a minute- where'd my post go? 7:34 AM. It was after the video was up. But before Charlie's.

kj, You have a "Good Morning" post over on the Main page, perhaps in your haste to be the first post of the day, you posted it there? You're still #1 over there though.
In case you haven't visited our pages for a while, we have a new method for "winning" the "Early Bird" post. It goes to the first person that correctly answers Charlie's question here on the What'sUP page. Just like Marsha did today! :->

By k j (Kathiscc) on Thursday, August 28, 2008 - 07:47 am:

Dang, I waited and waited. I never get the early bird. The video was up and I posted. Here first, then on cam notes. Boo Hoo.

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Thursday, August 28, 2008 - 08:27 am:

Is the 2009 calendar available yet? I can't seem to locate it on the website.

Alex, take a look at the Pasty Cam page. In the upper left corner, you'll see an ad for the the new 2009 Pasty Cam calendar, featuring the U.P. aerial photography of Neil Harri. You can also access the order form HERE. Order yours today and don't forget, U.P. pasty orders will start up again after Labor Day!

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Thursday, August 28, 2008 - 08:39 am:

Good Morning all.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Thursday, August 28, 2008 - 09:46 am:

Good morning!

Can we see what pictures are in the calendar before ordering it? There were some this year that I thought were not worthy of the UP beauty. But that's only one person's opinion. However, Neil's pictures are wonderful. But I still would like to see what I'm ordering in case I want to order one for somebody else.

Pictures in the 2008 Calendar were chosen by nominations from Pasty Cam visitors, so ever picture was one that somebody wanted to be included. Most of the 2009 photos are favorites from Neil that appeared on the Pasty Cam, or high resolution shots he took especially for next year's Calendar. You can see most of them in Neil's Guest Gallery Album.

By Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Thursday, August 28, 2008 - 09:51 am:

KJ - sometimes the final upload of the What'sUP page will overwrite notes written before my initial comments. Sorry, it sounds like that's what happened. There's a whole lot of technical things that go on when each day is published, sometimes with unexpected results.

By Smfwlk (Trollperson) on Thursday, August 28, 2008 - 10:04 am:

Thanks for the answer to DebS (Usedtobeayooper) question about the calendar because I also wanted to see more of the pics before ordering.

By Liz Timmer (Lizziet) on Thursday, August 28, 2008 - 11:23 am:

We leave tomorrow for our annual trek out of the Chicago area to the wilds of Northern Wisconsin and then a glorious week on the UP! The Scottish Terrier always seems to fit right in to the misty, cooler weather and the craggy paths to wander on and through the forests. We have several waterfalls on our list to visit as well as two days at the Porkies!

By FJL (Langoman) on Thursday, August 28, 2008 - 12:30 pm:

I would think that any picture of the U. P. is a winner. Seems like some people were disappointed with the calender in the past as to their want to preview it. As I recall there was nothing but praise about Neil's photos in the past, but then things do change.........

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Thursday, August 28, 2008 - 01:09 pm:

To me, it doesn't matter what the calender looks like, there will always be one hanging in our house and my office. I've had a ton of comments from the 2008 calender; I can only imagine what the 2009 calender will bring.

Liz: It's funny that you should mention how your Scotty fits into the misty, cool weather and crags of the UP. The Dr. and I just spent 3 weeks in the Scottish Highlands and I must say that except for the mountains, parts of the UP look exactly like the moors of the Highlands. It's no wonder why we liked Scotland so much; it reminded us of home.........

The photo in today's Decade of the Pasty Cam on this day from 2000, "Scaling the Mackinac Bridge - Jon Jacobson" led me back to that original page, (How'd I ever miss it before?) where I found the following note …

By ellen Ylitalo Minnesota:
"the last time I crossed the straits was way back in 54.
/the bridge didn't exist then. we had to load up on big cargo ships. The name Petoskey rings a bell. …"

I have such vivid childhood memories of those hours-long waits on the docks and the crossings in dad's ol' dark green 1950 Mercury 4 door fat salami er… sedan (Ahhh, what a luxurious old land yacht that was!) I'm always up for finding more about the old Mackinac Straits Ferries, both the Michigan State Car Ferries and the earlier railroad ferries.

So I was thus inspired to do a bit of Googling.

Lookie what I found, some great visual memories of those days not unlike those often seen here, and found at the Copper Country Reflections web site:

These were found at http://kraft-mi.org/VintagePostCards.htm

1. St. Ignace, MI, Michigan state ferry dock
2. Ferry, City of Petoskey (post card)
3. Ferry, City of Petoskey (photo)
4. Ferry, City of Munisng (post card)
5. Ferry, City of Munisng (photo)

(These, and many more at the above site are claimed to be postcards, although many appear to photographs, sadly most are untitled.)

Liz...I know so much what you're saying about your Scotty! Our two Scottish Terriers are the same way when we visit northern MN.! If anything really brings out the personality of a Scottish Terrier, you have to have at least two! They love a good challenge! :)

The picture of the chassell drive-in theater sure brings back good memories. Was a projectionist there in the summer of 1952. Also drove the fogger and worked the concession stand. For a young man of 17 it was a very learning experience. And fun too.........

By Russell E. Emmons (Russemmons) on Thursday, August 28, 2008 - 06:56 pm:

We have an original post card in our collection of the "Petoskey" as shown here. I scanned it and posted it in my Guest Gallery album. Also a picture of the "Cheyboygan" docked that I took as a boy from the deck of the Petoskey or maybe the "Munising" Lots of memorys from those old ships, I rode them all even the old original side loader "Mackinac", even went across on the Chief Wawatam a few times! Remember too standing on the deck of the new "Vacationland" as we crossed watching them building "Big Mac"! This was all before most of you were born!

Marsha--Hope you and your husband have a terrific weekend in
Aura. I returned from the UP last Sunday evening. I miss the stars,
the wind in the trees, special friends and relatives and the
geography. Lucky me--I get to return next week to attend my
daughter's wedding on Presque Isle. Lucky her--she and her
husband get to live in the UP! It's good to be home again on Pasty
Cam. No Internet connection at my Dad's cottage..but then,, I'm
not missing the UP when I'm in the UP.

Do we know which pictures they are by any chance??

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Friday, August 29, 2008 - 09:16 am:

Sorry, I forgot to add this to my above message. Don't know how to make it blue like you do, Charlie.
