If you're a regular visitor, you may recall the water level problems we had here in the Copper Country last summer. One of our regular viewers, Sally Beaudette thought it was time to check in with a report from their dock in Bootjack on the levels this year, compared to last year. Her son, Brad Beaudette took the top two photos as proof that the levels have definitely risen since last summer's draught. How fun to have taken the second photo to begin with, then to reenact it the following year besides. Thanks for the entertaining report!

The bottom two photos come from Paul Roberts and Michael Keranen, respectively. Paul was driving by the Ahmeek Park and noticed that some new shrubs have been planted and have taken root quite well, where the full-grown hedge once stood. In Michael's photo, you can see what happened just about a year ago, to the beautiful hedge that borders this little roadside park at the intersection of U.S. 41 and the Cliff Drive. The Horizons High School in Mohawk, with the help of the Keweenaw Road Commission, tore out the remains of the burnt bushes back in May. Then to complete the job, the class planted new Arbor Vitaes as part of a Learning Service Project. The class incorporated different aspects of planning the job, into valuable learning experiences, so they helped to beautify their community, while gaining hands on knowledge. You can read more about their undertaking in this article. Hats off to the young people involved and their teachers too!

I just received several pictures of the "Burning Bushes" on the day of the fire, back in 2007. Thought everyone might want a look at those too.

New to the site this year, and we did not make it to the Kewenaw
last summer. Was the fire set or planned?
Also I sure miss Day in History.

Mary says: Welcome Bob! I don't quite remember how the fire started, if it was due to the dry weather we had and a spark or if it was started due to carelessness, but I do know that it wasn't a planned burn. Maybe someone else can chime in if they can remember how it started. Thanks!

Just got back from two weeks in paradise. Or in other words--Fort Wilkins in Copper Harbor. This is the earliest we have ever gone and was able to make the Pasty Fest. Had a WONDERFUL TASTING PASTY. (do they really taste that good if you send for them and have to reheat?) The fourth parade and fireworks were spectacular. first time for the grandson to see that many people in Copper Harbor. We will never go that early again because of the black flies. they were horrendous. Everything else was awsome!!! I have great pictures but have no idea how to put them on the site.

Mary says: Hi Suzanne ~ The easiest way to share the photos of your trip to paradise, is to click on this link: Pasty Gallery Then you can "Register" for your own Gallery Album, to which you can upload the photos. That's where I go to choose the daily Pasty Cam pictures.

This would be a good time to remind all the present Gallery Album owners, to send me an email whenever you add new photos, at: mdrew@pasty.com. That way I won't miss anything new that's recently been uploaded. Thank you!

If I remember right I think the paper said it was from a careless thrown out cig butt that started the fire?

Top 2 pics look like Geo. Washington on the Delaware, when he was a boy.:)

In the last photo you can see the back of the gift shop. It did not open last year and was not open over Memorial Day weekend. Does anyone know if it will be open selling local gifts this summer? The locally made items where nice to see for a change.

I hope no one was in that outhouse reading the Sunday paper cover to cover! If so, what a way to go.

By Debi Steinle (Debi) on Friday, July 11, 2008 - 06:22 am:

Funny you should mention the outhouse, Tholland. As a matter of fact my husband and I were the ones to discover the fire. I was going to use the facilities there, when I noticed a plume of smoke coming from behind the hedges. Before we knew it they were up in flames. That would have been quite scary if I was in there!!
Still not sure if it was a cigarette butt or a lighter that started on fire.

Great pictures and I'm sure glad to see the water's risen that much.

Oh yeah Mary, I can upload pictures alright. Are they still putting pictures of newbors on here?

Mary says: We still have a "New Arrivals" page, Deb, so you can upload a picture of that beautiful little Granddaughter, Izzy to it! You can find the page here: New Arrivals. Make sure you resize the picture before uploading, so it's not too big. Let me know if you need any help. Good Luck!
