A pair of sky shots from Karl Berg and Taana Kalliainen, respectively. I figured these photos would be fitting for today, which is TAX day for most of us and if you haven't gotten yours done yet, you may just be looking to the sky for the strength to get it done.

Back to the pictures though...Karl sure captured quite the phenomenon in the first photo. A large orb, surrounded by a halo, with a crescent arc at the very top. I'm not certain if the orb is actually the sun or a reflection of it also, like the halo. I'm sure there are scientific names for all this too, so if you can supply us with further information, please feel free to do so.

Then Taana snapped another sun shot, as it peeks between the branches of the trees, before shining its way through the haze that was hanging in the air that day. Did you notice that her picture is really a study done in black and white? Interesting...

Now quit staring at these beautiful scenes and go finish your taxes! :->

And in other parts of the world, it was viewed as a "message from God"...

Ok, here is some scientific stuff: What is shown in the top picture is a a 22° radius circular halo and sundogs (parhelia) produced by hexagonal column shaped ice crystals. Also seen is a upper tangental arc produced by the same ice crystals. More info at:

What is the status of the gallery? It's been down for a long time now, and of course the links to personal pages above don't work.

By Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Tuesday, April 15, 2008 - 08:38 am:

Our apologies again on the Gallery, as it is being upgraded to accommodate higher capacity, in both users and pictures. It should come back online in the next couple of days.

The sun is trying to get to us finally and they have captured it well.

Quick question. Are there still fishing villages in The Keweenaw as there were in the 40's & 50's?If so would they be listed here somewhere.

By Judy Thiele (Judefae) on Wednesday, April 16, 2008 - 08:55 pm:

I wished I could have seen the sun in person instead of through the pics. I know there is a phenomena called a sun dog or solar dog caused by ice crystals in the atmosphere. Maybe it a form of sun dog.
