What a learning experience it is each day to prepare "This Day in History". Amazing how many folks from the U.P. have had significant achievements, like Glen Seaborg from Ishpeming who first discovered Plutonium on February 23, 1941.

Good morning! Sure glad last week is over. Time to relax for the weekend. It's really nice to be seeing the sun out for a longer period of time.

Congratulations Paul, on the early bird. And what a beautiful day it is here. My thoughts and prayers are with a dear friend of mine, Margaret who is facing the employment line as I was this past Fall/Winter2007.

Good Morning, Everyone! We are supposed to have good weather for the weekend, for a change! It is the calm before another winter storm comes Monday night and Tuesday. Have a good weekend, everyone! Congratulations, Paulwebbtroll, on your Early Bird!

Love the falls pictures. I went to school with Ned Aldridge. I used to know a Tom Beveridge. Wonder if that's the same one.

I hasten to add, perhaps of special interest to Pasty Cam:

Wikipedia: Robert W."Bob" Bemer, the Father of ASCII.

[Born in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, on February 8, 1920 – FRN]

Where would Pasty Cam, and the rest of us be today without that contribution?

It was my great pleasure to work with "Uncle" Bob (no relation, just a nickname) for more than a decade at General Electric & Honeywell's "Software Factory"!

An excerpt from his Biography:

Quote:

1970 - 1974 Organizes at General Electric the software departments after his idea of the "Software Factory"

1971 First published a warning on Y2K, the "Millennium Bug" [A very timely shot at the dreaded Y2K "Millennium Bug" that had so many people running around like headless chickens nearly 30 years later, eh? I guess very few people listened! -FRN]

1974 - 1990 Works as an independent consultant at Honeywell.

1982 official retirement but keeps on publishing and working from his home office [… then atop Moon Mountain, in north Phoenix, AZ -FRN]

Click on the links in the References and External links sections of the Wikipedia article for some of Bob's really fascinating tales of the history of computing!
