I'm BAAACCK! :->

It was good to get away and enjoy the California sunshine, but it's always good to get back home in the U.P., where you can see "one of a kind" scenes like the top two photos from E. Neil Harri. That first one is kind of a self-portrait, with the shadow of Neil's plane hovering over the pack of wolves he was photographing. Then he zooms in closer for a better look at several of the wolves seeming quite oblivious to Neil's presence.

The third picture from Aladino Mandoli isn't of wolves, even though a couple of them look like they could be. It's a shot from the 19th running of the UP 200 Sled Dog Races held over the weekend in the Marquette area. Dino says this was taken during the "Jackpine 30" portion of the race. Nice scenery in the background there too.

The U.P. was certainly a busy place over the weekend and if you were in the Lake Linden area on Saturday, then you must have heard the buzzing of the engines in the Winter Baja Races, sponsored by Michigan Tech. That fourth photo is from last year's competition. Lots of work goes into turning the Lake Linden Park area into a Mini Baja race track for this event.

That about wraps it up for my first day back in the saddle. A big thanks to Charlie for taking over the reins for me. I really like the new features he added and enjoyed discovering them each day along with the rest of you!

P.S. Happy President's Day!

More great wolf photos on Neil's link. A reminder of how wild the UP still is.

Welcome back, Mary; we missed you! Those are great photos, today. I always love Neil Harri's photos. And, I am really interested in dog sled races. I was reading some about the Marquette race last night on WLUC TV 6's web site last night; I hope we get to see more pictures of this year's race. And, I hope we get to see pictures from this year's Baja race, as well. :-) Many thanks, Mary, and photographers for today's great pictures!

Welcome back Mary!

By E. Neil Harri (Ilmayksi) on Monday, February 18, 2008 - 09:19 pm:

I am flying for the annual wolf population survey for the West U.P. So the wolf images are all from Marquette county and West. I have some research collars in most of those counties that I track to find the packs.

Neil how great that you're doing a job that you seem to love. Lucky you.Are you actually involved with the wolves on the ground also?
