Full moon rising    ...scroll down to share comments

Frederic W. Koski has captured himself a glowing full moon, rising over Lake Superior and her shoreline. I'm sure there's a scientific reason, but I'm guessing the moon appears so large in this photo, because many folks feel like they're in heaven when spending time here UP North. It makes sense then that we must be closer to the moon here than anywhere else, right? :->

By Smfwlk (Trollperson) on Monday, September 24, 2007 - 06:32 am:

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Monday, September 24, 2007 - 07:08 am:

Absolutely beautiful!

By Tanya (Kaitlyn05) on Monday, September 24, 2007 - 07:09 am:

Good Morning all. I Hope everyone has a great week.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Monday, September 24, 2007 - 07:10 am:

I think the moon will be full on Wednesday and this one's called the Harvest Moon, but that looks pretty full to me.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Monday, September 24, 2007 - 07:44 am:

A scientific reason you want, hmmm?? Well, it's simply a matter of our mind playing tricks on us and the larger moon being an optical illusion. I've attached a neat little website that explains the Ponzo Illusion and how it works with a couple of illustrations.......

I vividly remember coming UP, driving west on 28 I think, in the Newberry area. I looked in my rearview mirror after dark and a HUGE full moon encompassed the road behind me. It was an amazing sight to see, and I'll never forget it!

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Monday, September 24, 2007 - 09:23 am:

Its huge

By F.F. (Flipflop) on Monday, September 24, 2007 - 09:39 am:

I'm gonna have to try the rolled up tube experiment.
Thanks Capt. !
And all along I thought the moon size had to do with how hungry I was at the time (ya know the saying.. eyes bigger when yer hungry ??)

By Frederic W. Koski (Fred) on Monday, September 24, 2007 - 09:52 am:

It also appears larger with a long lens, in this case 200mm. This was captured right before the last eclipse, almost full.

By Becca (Bec) on Monday, September 24, 2007 - 10:14 am:

~speechless!~

By Liz B (Lizidaho) on Monday, September 24, 2007 - 10:22 am:

Thank you Mr. Koski! It just became my screen
saver. Doubt we will be seeing the full moon this time around. Snow/rain clouds welcomed in Fall in Idaho/Mt/WY. Snow on the borders per that chipper weather guy this a.m.

By Bob Williams (Wabbit) on Monday, September 24, 2007 - 11:10 am:

It looks like you can see the man in the moon!

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Monday, September 24, 2007 - 11:19 am:

Beautiful.....thanks for the picture Mr Koski....and thank you Captian for the great info...interesting. It will always amaze me that God provides us with such beauty to see. Things like this make me sit back and think of what the word says.....God knows when a sparrow falls...why should I worry, I am in His hands. He is an awesome Father......God Bless you all...

By Gus LL (Gusll) on Monday, September 24, 2007 - 01:34 pm:

Great Shot, It looks like that is Louis Point with that tree leaning at the tip of the point. Probably taken from around Big Traverse.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Monday, September 24, 2007 - 06:53 pm:

Very cool picture! We have seen a number of scenes like that in the flesh, but we never had our camera at the right time to get a picture! Well done!

By Walter P McNew (Waltermcnew) on Monday, September 24, 2007 - 07:27 pm:

looking through a thicker part of the atmosphere has a magnifying effect thus a moon that looks larger than it really is and theres more the moon is closer when it is overhead how about that i remain walter p

By Uncle Chuck @ Little Betsy (Unclechuck) on Monday, September 24, 2007 - 09:07 pm:

Great picture of the moon, when we're up in November (4 wheelin, not really hunting) Marty always threatens to show us the "dark side of the moon"! lol

By Clyde Elmblad (Clyde) on Tuesday, September 25, 2007 - 12:03 am:

Great Shot Fred and I've been by that point many times. I'll leave it up to someone else to guess where.

By Audrey, San Jose, (Ca) on Tuesday, September 25, 2007 - 05:40 pm:
