The stars of the Pasty Cam show eight years ago today was a family out for a picnic and some fishing at the Eagle Harbor Marina. A lovely day, as I recall, with a cool breeze from the lake, slowing down the black flies, but warm enough for short sleeves.

Mary Drew is downstate with her mom who has a large blood clot near her heart and has to have a stent put in . Very serious medical situation. Along with Mary's nephew Kevin just having had a bone marrow transplant- this family is now in the midst of two medical crises. Lots of prayers, love and support needed to be sent their way!

Good Morning, Everyone! I hope you all have a good weekend! Our weather here is nice this morning, but the rains are supposed to be coming in here this afternoon and stay through tomorrow. So, I guess we will be doing mostly indoor stuff here this weekend.

Mikie, my thoughts and prayers are with both you and Precious! You two have really had a tough go of it. I'm so sorry to hear that you have a collapsed lung now! Please get well soon!

Mary, I am so sorry to hear that your mom is seriously ill, on top of everything else. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your whole family for the recoveries of your mom & Kevin!

By Tom Karjala (Tom) on Saturday, June 2, 2007 - 10:26 am:

Mary, my thoughts are with you and your mother. Very positive thoughts.

Hi all. Been out of touch for some time and I guess I have missed a lot. Nice that so many have the great support of Pasty fans. It's amazing what collective good thoughts can do. Stay positive.
Charlie, not sure if you are in touch this weekend. Have been meaning to post! With summer around the corner, I was wondering if Pasty has wireless or high speed service out in Jacobsville yet? Hope so as email is my lifeline!!
Have a great weekend everyone!
Stix

A collapsed lung is a horrible thing to endure. All best wishes to Mikie.
Also, many trials at once multiply geometrically, so best wishes, Mary.

Mary, many thoughts are with you from Northern IL. Your family has had much to handle recently.
Mikie, you and Precious are also receiving warm and positive thoughts.
Pasty does become one big family even when we don't all post frequently.

By Happy to be in the U.P. (Lahelo) on Saturday, June 2, 2007 - 12:54 pm:

Thought I'd update you guys. Mary's mom is out of surgery and all is fine so far. There was nothing done that was invasive, though the procedures went on for 7 hours. We'll continue to pray for her recovery as she comes out of the anesthesia.

By Danbury (Danbury) on Saturday, June 2, 2007 - 07:05 pm:

Good to hear that, Deb.
A thorough recovery to all that need it, and strength to them and their relatives.

Volvoja was the name of a Finnish Newspaper on Pine St. in Calumet. The English version was later called the Copper Country News. They went out of business I believe in the early 60's.

"Can anyone translate "wolvoja" to English?"

Daveofmohawk (Daveofmohawk):
"Volvoja was the name of a Finnish Newspaper on Pine St. in Calumet."

I knew somethin' didn't look or sound right with "wolvoja", although it rang a very faint bell.

After letting it simmer for most of the day, and now with Dave's "Volvoja" as a further memory jogger, it finally came to me:

The Finnish newspaper was not "Volvoja", but "Valvoja" [translation: "Observer"].

I remember that was one of various Finnish language newspapers I saw as a youngster at my granddad's farm, "Opas" [translation: "Guide"] being another.
