It sure seemed to be a wet spring 8 years ago. Looks like we might be in for some rain here today along Lake Superior's southern shore.

Mary, Kevin will be in our prayers today.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Wednesday, May 23, 2007 - 07:49 am:

Top of the world to ya!!

A much better morning than yesterday, although round 2 of the storms never came so I'm starting to doubt the validity of the weatherwoman as well. I mean heck, with a fancy radar name like "Super Mega Doppler 13", you'd think the thing could predict the weather, clean the dishes, mow the yard, take out the trash, etc... ;-)

By Pennie (Trolldiva) on Wednesday, May 23, 2007 - 07:52 am:

Please keep our own Mikie and his wife Precious in your thoughts. They were in a horrible accident over the weekend. Mikie is home now but Precious is in bad shape and still in the hospital. The car is totaled, but at least they are alive. Mikie we love you baby!!!

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Wednesday, May 23, 2007 - 07:59 am:

Mary, I'm sorry to learn of the passing of your father in law, My sincere condolences to your family. The very best wishes to Kevin on his big day, he is going to be ok! Mikie and Precious, may God grant you the fastest healing for you two!

Sorry, didnt see that Deb had posted about Mikie and Precious last night.

With all that has happened to everyone I forgot to ask. I have a friend whos son is going to be a senior at tech next year and is in need of housing. I am calling my uncle to get the name of his realtor who rents out his house that she can call. Does anyone have any recommendations where else?

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Wednesday, May 23, 2007 - 11:49 am:

Assuming that your friend's son is a returning Tech student, Brooke, have him check out on the Barkboard (available thru MTU's web site for current students, but he has to have a valid login & password). Even if he is a new transfer student, he should be able to login to get to the Barkboard. All kinds of housing is usually posted on Barkboard.

Unfortunately, much of the housing may already be rented now, as most of the housing stuff was done a couple of months ago. There is a major catch clause in a lot of the off-campus leases, that he should look out for before he signs: watch out when the lease runs out. Some of the kids this year found out their leases ran out before finals! One kid even lost his stuff because his parents couldn't get up there to get it on such short notice. He was only given one day's notice that his lease was running out, & he had to be totally moved out of it. So he was left camping in a tent in a friend's backyard for the end of school & finals. I understand that some have been able to negotiate that they be able to stay through finals or graduation, by paying extra rent.

By Fran in GA (Francesinga) on Wednesday, May 23, 2007 - 12:37 pm:

My prayers go out to Mikie and Precious. May you both recover completely. My thoughts and prayers are with Kevin today and also to your family Mary for your loss.

By Sdcferndale (Sdcferndale) on Wednesday, May 23, 2007 - 02:00 pm:

Does anyone know how to test a piece of old silver to see if it is really silver and not plated silver? I have seen on TV there is some kind of liquid you pour on the silver but I don't know what it actually is.

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Wednesday, May 23, 2007 - 02:17 pm:

I'm betting Capt Paul will know the answer to the silver question.

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Wednesday, May 23, 2007 - 02:23 pm:

I found this on the internet (referring to a silver tray):

If you want to be sure you can test it with nitric acid-put just one drop on back of your tray-green colour= copper, brass or nickel silver.Cream colour=silver or silver alloy. Rinse it well!Good luck!

Will that work Cap'n Paul?

What's on Sharon's feeder? A big bird or just a squirrel?

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Wednesday, May 23, 2007 - 02:26 pm:

Thanks to everyone who has emailed me and the nice messages on here about Precious and me. She will be coming home and will have to stay in bed for some time. Both of us are worried about the other, after forty years of married life you worry about the other. I think she is starting to heal since she is getting a little cranky. My son in law the doctor is with her now as is most of Lansing according to the nurse. Our friends are getting together to make sure we have dinners each one will make dinner on a different night. What they don't realize is that I do the cooking and she does the dishes, would rather have someone do the dishes and vacuum the floors. I have a lot of pain from the seat belts and Jimmie the fat white cat has decided that his resting place should be on my chest. All in all I am the luckiest man in the world having the friends here and on the internet that I have everyone is so supportive.
Thank you all Mikie

Cindy:
Thanks for the info. I knew I'd get an answer if I posted it here.

Mike, here is hoping you and Precious' a fast recovery.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, May 23, 2007 - 06:04 pm:

Mikie, You are welcome. You're such a great guy that you deserve lots of friends. Glad Precious seems to be healing.

Any word on Kevin and his donor?

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Wednesday, May 23, 2007 - 06:36 pm:

There are actually several ways to test real silver against silver plate:

1) Probably the easiest way is to scratch a non-conspicuous area and see if there is another metal underneath.

2) Use a magnet and see if it sticks. If it does, then it is obviously plated.

3) Make a little scratch, drop some nitric acid on it and see what colour it turns. Green for copper or brass, cream for sterling, and red for silver. However, I would not recommend this method!! The fumes from the acid are very dangerous and also very bad for your skin.

4) Sometimes a metal detector can be used because native silver will show up different than copper or brass or iron.

5) Also you can check the specific gravity by measuring the amount of water displaced when the piece is put into a container of water.

There are other ways, but they are much too technical to be used in the home. What item are you trying to test SdcFerndale??

Mikie,You do not know me but I remember your name from living in Hubbell myself. I remember the name Mary Kay Dulong. A relative? So sorry about your accident. Take care and hope you both heal quickly. Theresa,Colorado

By eugenia r. thompson (Ert) on Wednesday, May 23, 2007 - 09:07 pm:

Mikie, so good to hear from you! I hope Precious is home soon so you two can take care of each other.

I like your cooking/cleaning arrangement. Wish we had something like that here in our house!

By eugenia r. thompson (Ert) on Wednesday, May 23, 2007 - 09:09 pm:

One way to tell if something is silver is if it's NOT tarnished, it's probably NOT silver. If is black w/ tarnish, rub a spot w/ some silver polish, and you may be pleasantly surprised.

By Fran in GA (Francesinga) on Wednesday, May 23, 2007 - 09:41 pm:

Mike, I am so glad to hear that Precious will be coming home. I know you both will be sore as heck and probably bruised all over. Years ago we were hit by an elderly woman and it totaled our car. I ended up all different shades of black, blue, purple yellow and green. Anyway take care my friend. Fran

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Wednesday, May 23, 2007 - 09:56 pm:

Another way to tell if something is sterling silver or silver plate is by the markings on the bottom of the piece, if you can read them. In fact, that's probably the easiest, safest way, assuming they are legible.

By Erica - Florida Keys (Erica) on Wednesday, May 23, 2007 - 10:18 pm:

mikie,I hope you and Precious both make a full recovery. You are fortunate to have each other and so many friends.,too.
My prayers will be with Kevin and his donor tomorrow. I hope Kevin has a speedy recovery and a long
,happy life.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Wednesday, May 23, 2007 - 10:51 pm:

Brooke, you mentioned at one point this week something about looking for a place to camp this weekend, that is closer to your home because of the high gas prices. I found a site that might be useful for you to use as a starting point. It is a list of occupancy rates for the weekend:
