The Lake Linden-Hubbell Schools recently celebrated "Summer Day" at their Hot Lunch Program. It has become a traditional "fun" day that they hold every year with the kids and adults encouraged to dress for summer with sunglasses and hats. Lunch that day consisted of summer foods, such as hot dogs, watermelon, and ants on a log to name a few of the tasty entrees. There was summer music playing during the lunch period and much laughter was heard throughout the time. The students signed up for a drawing to win prizes like beach balls, beach towels and other summer theme items. Now doesn't this look like a fun place to eat your lunch each day?

Thanks to Judy Byykkonen and Gail Deiro, for sending these photos to me. They, along with the rest of the "lunch ladies" in the second photo, do a great job feeding our children a nutritious meal and at the same time make it fun to be there eating it too. It's a job that requires plenty of patience and numerous smiles for all the students. These tireless workers have finally achieved the fame they deserve in the form of an action figure doll, depicting their occupation. Who'd have thought that one day the "lunch lady" would take her place next to the Barbie, Ken and GI Joe dolls of our past! Check it out: Lunch Lady Action Figure. :->

How could I be reading this so early that only one email is ahead of me?? Our 80F day is gone and we are back to 50s and rain.

Hey, I want one of those Pasty.com aprons like the cook on the right.

Don't you love the sunglasses with snow pants on the little ones?

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Tuesday, March 27, 2007 - 09:08 am:

I was thinking the same thing about the sunglasses and snow pants...in the UP, though, you have to keep your snow pants handy, even in the summer. I've heard of snow on "da Fort July."

By Robinohio (Robinohio) on Tuesday, March 27, 2007 - 09:17 am:

A definite sign they are in the U.P. jumps out to me living in Ohio. They are all wearing snow pants and boots. My children were one of the few who wore snow pants and boots to school and they had to take them off at thier lockers.
Its even hard to find suitable boots and snow clothes around here. All made for looks not warmth
looks like they had a fun day. Makes me want to have a picnic

Me too! Me too! Me too! We don't have fun like that at my school (high school).

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Tuesday, March 27, 2007 - 09:46 am:

If I were wearing my snowpants in the lunch line I would be thinking summer too! Got to 78 in Pinckney yesterday, was a little warm with the cubscouts in the evening.

By Cindy, Now in New Baltimore, MI (Cindy) on Tuesday, March 27, 2007 - 09:58 am:

It looks like fun. Keep the food hot, please. My fourth graders would like to join the kids in Lake Linden for lunch today. We could be there in about 11 hours!

Help! My mind is going crazy trying to figure out what "ants on a log" are!! Some of you out there are saying my mind wouldn't have far to go! Right?

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Tuesday, March 27, 2007 - 10:28 am:

Ants on a log is cream cheese on celery with raisons on the cream cheese.

By Helen (Heleninhubbel) on Tuesday, March 27, 2007 - 11:23 am:

By Greta Armata (Gretania) on Tuesday, March 27, 2007 - 11:38 am:

Other version of ants on a log: carrot sticks or celery sticks spread with peanut butter and dotted with raisons.

By Dan Severs (Seversda) on Tuesday, March 27, 2007 - 01:06 pm:

i remember standing in that line wearing snow pants...granted it was in the old elementary school. very few people down here know what snow pants are and the only place you can really find them in Cincinnati is Outdoor World/Bass Pro Shop. but then again, their idea of a snow plow is a dump truck with a blade on the front...

By Brad Codere (Bcodere) on Tuesday, March 27, 2007 - 02:49 pm:

Not only is it a fun place to be but I'll put the lunches served in that lunchroom up against any school in the U.P.! Great food served by great people! Thanks ladies!

By Marge Roberts (Fluffyyellow) on Tuesday, March 27, 2007 - 03:03 pm:

Shows how deep Cincinnati has gotten into my Michigan blood. I thought, "How practical! Their school uniform is overalls." Snowpants are out of my brain. (When I had to wear them, they were under our skirts.)

How many of you faithful readers can remember "puttees" (please excuse the spelling if incorrect)

By Jan and Mike in Herscher (Janandmike) on Tuesday, March 27, 2007 - 11:18 pm:

Gotta love those lunch ladies!! Thanks, Mary, for the link to tha action lunch lady. Will have to order one (or more) since I'm a retired lunch lady (23 years). Now my husband is jealous for a snowplower action figure (because he is a retired state highway worker.) Pasty Central makes our day.

By Just me (Jaby) on Thursday, March 29, 2007 - 11:19 pm:

Hmmm, I think extra large servings are in order for Bcodere the next time he comes to hot lunch! It sure is nice to be appreciated! Thanks,Brad![and thanks to ryan too for your nice comment]
