Today's blast from the past comes courtesy of this interesting wood stove shot from Jonathan Hopper.

We're still pretty much in the deep freeze, +1, wind chill -16.

Good Morning!!!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Thursday, February 15, 2007 - 07:47 am:

We're supposed to get all the way up to 10 today. But we're starting out at -8. Gotta hate winter.

By dlp (Babyseal) on Thursday, February 15, 2007 - 07:51 am:

That wood stove sure looks inviting. What I wouldn't give to be sitting next to it with my cup of coffee and reading my novel..............
But the reality is I have to put in my 8 hours at work :(

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Thursday, February 15, 2007 - 08:30 am:

I was just reading Sharon's journal. I've been wondering how many people stay through the winter in Copper Harbor? Anyone know? How about Eagle Harbor or some of the other small towns?

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Thursday, February 15, 2007 - 09:06 am:

Good Morning, been to work an hour and I can finally feel my feet. Its a little too cold for "work clothes".

By Tom Karjala (Tom) on Thursday, February 15, 2007 - 09:13 am:

Where's Joanie this morning? Off on a jaunt somewhere? No jokes/???

By kathie Murto (Murtomania) on Thursday, February 15, 2007 - 09:51 am:

We made it here last night in Marquette. Beautiful drive until we got to Munising. TOTAL WHITE OUT!! Good thing that was for only 1/2 hour of the driving. Beautiful here in Marquette-getting ready to go and peak at the UP 200 dog's and the mushers. Should be an interesting and beautiful experience.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Thursday, February 15, 2007 - 09:53 am:

Here I am. I'm suffering from indigestion - - - got up in the middle of the night and raided hubby's Valentine's Day chocolates. It does not and I repeat, does not, pay to be a glutton! Although, they did taste pretty good.

By Sharon I. Smith (Sharons) on Thursday, February 15, 2007 - 10:28 am:

I think there may be about 100 people in the Copper Harbor area this winter, and George Hite quoted 123 in Eagle Harbot Township, about 30 in Eagle Harbor itself.

It's nice and quiet around here...unless you're in town when the snowmobiles come through!

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Thursday, February 15, 2007 - 10:47 am:

Snowmobiling in Copper Harbor to my hubby and I is a great meal at the Mariner!

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Thursday, February 15, 2007 - 10:59 am:

Kathie, glad you made the trip without too many problems. I would love to see the sled dogs and mushers. I bet that is an experience.

Speaking of sled dogs:
What do sled dogs say before telling you a joke? "This one will sleigh you!"

By kathie Murto (Murtomania) on Thursday, February 15, 2007 - 11:32 am:

I will take lots of pictures and send them in to Pasty, hopefully they will get posted.

Mary says: You can send a few to me at mdrew@pasty.com then I can pick out several to post. Once the gallery software is updated (which will hopefully be done this weekend), I could set you up with your own Pasty Guest Gallery. Then you can upload all your photos from the event for folks to see! Check out the Photo Submission Policy for more information about getting a Gallery Album set up!

Nice view on the airport cam right now, with the perspective against the sun.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Thursday, February 15, 2007 - 12:35 pm:

Kathie M, I'm glad that you made it UP there safely! Munising to Ishpeming is one of the major snow belts, so I would expect more problems in that area. I know that we've had problems in the Ishpeming area in the winter.

I look forward to seeing your dog sled pictures! I love dogs. I have been fascinated for years with the Iditarod. That takes so much dedication and teamwork to take care of so many dogs, practice, keeping them healthy, etc.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Thursday, February 15, 2007 - 02:13 pm:

I found out something interesting about sled dogs and mushers. Before the race they all assemble in the barking lot.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Thursday, February 15, 2007 - 02:36 pm:

Joanie- groan, but it's the truth! Have you ever watched the beginning of one of those sled dog races on TV? I could not believe all of the barking, with all of the dogs, who were so excited to get hitched up & in gear!

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Thursday, February 15, 2007 - 03:09 pm:

Well, sorry folks but I'm not quite finished. There was a story that I read years and years ago about a sled dog named "Frostbite". The poor thing got his name when the severe cold caused him to lose his tail. But fear not, the owner took good care of the situation. He took him to Target, it was a retail store.

By Jacobsville (Barb) on Thursday, February 15, 2007 - 05:05 pm:

G R O A N ! ! ! !

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Thursday, February 15, 2007 - 05:32 pm:

Well since I got da Yoopers groaning here's one more; What do sled dogs like to play with? Their Sony Sleigh Stations. Sorry, I couldn't resist it.
Gotta go, hubby is coming home and I gotta stash some chocolate for my midnight snack. By the way, he did bring me home what I wanted for Valentine's Day, McDonald's Quarter Pounders with cheese and lots of fries. I just love my husband!

By Uncle Chuck @ Little Betsy (Unclechuck) on Thursday, February 15, 2007 - 06:59 pm:

Well nephew Ben and I got back from the CC last night. We rented snowmobiles from Evert's in Hancock (highly recommend this place, great guy's). Took off from Hancock, went thru Lake Linden, over to Gay, then over to Phoenix, back to Calumet and back to Hancock. About 85 miles, now I'm DEAD! My legs and back hurt so bad, if I never ride another sled again, it's ok with me! I offered anyone in the Gay bar $100.00 if they'd ride my sled back for me,lol, no takers! All in all, a great trip and it was nice to be in the Keweenaw. Too short of trip, had great weather and sunshine, did not get much work done, but didn't think we would-HA!

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Thursday, February 15, 2007 - 10:19 pm:

A great movie to see about sled dogs is Eight Below Zero.Have a hankerchief with you.You will kiss you dog after you see it.I have two Chihuahua's. I don't like bumper stickers, but if I was to have one it would read.. My Chihuahua Is Smarter Then Your Honor Student.

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Thursday, February 15, 2007 - 10:28 pm:

Dave---We could have a contest. We could sing that song..."My
dog's smarter than your dog. My dog's smarter than yours.

But actually, I bet they're all smart. And all very well loved.
