Eight years ago, the Pasty Cam caught a serene scene of a snowcovered downtown Calumet at night.

Some cold weather is coming to the Copper Country the next couple of days, along with a chance for lake effect snow. We're still in a snow drought -- far behind the normal snowfall for this time of year. Heikki Lunta we need you.

Good Morning All

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Wednesday, January 24, 2007 - 07:12 am:

Good morning everyone...or should I say 'night night' as I have been up all night working, and am now headed to bed to catch a couple of hours of sleep...or until Da Abbi and Bailey wake me up, at least ;)
Congrats on the Early Bird, Deb :)
Dean, we'll have to ship Charlotte up there to do her snow dance for ya'll :)

By Kenty (Dashamo) on Wednesday, January 24, 2007 - 07:14 am:

O.K. what gives? If it's not Deb, it's Mr. Deb. If it's not Mr. Deb, its' Trollperson. NOBODY is that lucky to get the early bird 90% of the time. What's up?!!!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, January 24, 2007 - 07:20 am:

Ya have to be UP early Kenty. The only reason I'm here because I have so many e-mails to read before I go to work. When I have to go in later, I don't bother to get up early. I like my sleep and let Trollperson get it. Ya have to be quick though. That Dean is sneaky!

What I want to know is how David knows what the picture is going to be before everybody else. David?????? What's UP with that?

Mornin' Renee', Nice to see you UP! Have a good day's sleep! LOL

By Carole (Carole) on Wednesday, January 24, 2007 - 07:26 am:

Deb S. Go to the archives eight years back to the date, and you will know what the picture will be on the 'What's Up' page for each day.

Carole, Thanks! David has nothing on you, huh?

Kosk, keep getting returned e-mails from you.

By JH (Thumbgardener) on Wednesday, January 24, 2007 - 07:49 am:

David and Joanie, looks like the secret is out.

By maija in Commerce Township (Maija) on Wednesday, January 24, 2007 - 08:04 am:

The Copper World sign looks like a beer mug.

UP towns are especially beautiful in the snow at night: clean white snow, that crisp clean air--no damp chill!

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Wednesday, January 24, 2007 - 08:21 am:

Yep, the secret is out, oh well it was fun playing fortune teller!

By Shelley Trowbridge (Shelleyt36) on Wednesday, January 24, 2007 - 08:55 am:

Does anyone know what's up with the bridge cam? It's been out of service a lot the last few months.

By Alicia Marshall (Aliciak) on Wednesday, January 24, 2007 - 09:49 am:

Hi
I like to collect old cookbooks and hand written ones even more. I got this recipe out of a local women's notebook that she had keep from the 1930's to the 1950's. She has notes who gave her the recipe. I have not tried this one yet.
I did not know that Gartners even had a lunchroom.
From Gartners Lunch room Very early 1950's
Mabel Kaarto's Rieska Finnish bread

3 cups white flour
1 1/2 cups barley flour
1/4 cup sugar
2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
2 teaspoons baking powder
Mix like pie crust with one stick of oleo or 1/2 cup shortening
Soften with 2 cups buttermilk. Mix and shape into two rounds about 3/4 inch thick. Prick tops
of the bread with a fork
Bake on cookie sheet for about 30 minutes.

Alicia

I always loved rieska. My mom used to make it all the time. I got the recipe from my step-mom but I haven't made it myself. Mmmm...good!

Shelley, Charlie updates BridgeCam every once in a while, but I don't know why it's not live anymore. I really miss it. For another view, you can always go here: http://www.admin.mtu.edu/urel/cams/fund/motion.html
but it's not quite as good a view.

By Smfwixom (Trollperson) on Wednesday, January 24, 2007 - 10:24 am:

Deb S. - thanks for letting me "get it" when you don't have to get up early.....

By kay Moore (Mskatie) on Wednesday, January 24, 2007 - 10:36 am:

Love the view of Calumet esp. at night and in the snow.Spent too much time at the Copper World last summer, bought some neat things there. And the young people who served us where a delight. I've always liked copper items. Have several things from my childhood from Hubbell area. My favorite is a small lamp of copper including the copper shade. But I don't know the story behind it. Also a miniture anvil of solid copper that I think grandpa gave us from the C & H mill. Happy day all :)

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Wednesday, January 24, 2007 - 12:26 pm:

Cha-Cha, finally got the Police Report. The guy only got a ticket for leaving the scene of an accident. I have a feeling that he was drunk, driving recklessly and not in control. It took the County Officer 7 days to complete the report.

By paul (Pungvait) on Wednesday, January 24, 2007 - 01:05 pm:

don't forget - only 11 months 'til Christmas eve

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Wednesday, January 24, 2007 - 01:13 pm:

Hmmmm, that describes most Houstonians out on the wet roads today...... ;-)

Have you been talking to my kids? I have been getting an updated countdown from them too.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Wednesday, January 24, 2007 - 01:21 pm:

Capt. Paul, my sediments exactly!

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Wednesday, January 24, 2007 - 01:32 pm:

Well so much for sleeping today...Bailey woke me up...100 pounds of doggie on your chest and in your face will do that, you know. And of course, Da Abbi's high pitched whining, as she sat at the patio door watching the snow falling didn't help matters either. So I am up and da doggies are happily outside playing in da snow. Hopefully this time next year, they'll be playing in da snow in da UP, eh :)

Morning Kosk :) And Miss Katie, when are you gonna get that new computer?

By Kathy P. (Katiaire) on Wednesday, January 24, 2007 - 01:38 pm:

Joanie, being a retired insurance adjuster from your state, here's my input: the police report has no bearing on liability. It's only usefulness is to ID the driver. In Il the insurance goes with the car. The driver's insurance (if the driver is not the owner) is secondary. The police report should note the insurance co. Contact them and present your claim. They owe you for replacement of equal value of the trees destroyed (which I know cannot be replaced in your heart).

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Wednesday, January 24, 2007 - 01:39 pm:

Joanie, Glad to hear that you got your police report :) Police officers can't write a police report on what they didn't witness or what evidence doesn't support...which is why he couldn't write the driver of the hit and run up for drunk driving....sorry.
Yepper depper, police reports take awhile...people don't realize that we work on not one report at a time, but on several at a time. And for car accidents, there is this huge long form (thank you very much to the insurance companies) that has to be filled in and attached to the police report...also known as PITA forms. No joke, but that form has got to have more than a hundred questions on it. Trust me, police work is about 99.9% report writing.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Wednesday, January 24, 2007 - 01:45 pm:

Kathy and Sur5er, the Sheriff's Department contacted me with the driver's name and insurance company. I called the insurance company and guess what? He never reported the accident - - - BUSTED! Another fishy thing, the insurance company called me back stating his phone number was a non-working number. She's sending him a letter. SIGH

By Kathy P. (Katiaire) on Wednesday, January 24, 2007 - 01:56 pm:

Joanie, if he left the scene it is not surprising he did not report the accident to his ins co; however, now that you have put the claim in motion, the ins co will follow up & get a report from him. They cannot refute his identity or the fact an accident occurred due to the police report. Unfortunately, "the squeaky wheel gets the grease"..so be persistant in following up. Take lots of photos to prove the damage. Since I doubt they can fully replace the 30' trees, they may have to replace the trees and still owe you some money.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Wednesday, January 24, 2007 - 02:55 pm:

Aw Kathy, you have an Airedale, you and doggie are sweet looking. Thanks for the info!

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Wednesday, January 24, 2007 - 03:15 pm:

Joanie, Glad you got your police report. I hope the drivers lack of initiative in resolving his own problems won't slow down your payment.

By Kathy P. (Katiaire) on Wednesday, January 24, 2007 - 04:45 pm:

Actually, I have 4 F Airedales and a young M Welsh Terrier. Yesterday I had my 10 yr old M Airedale put down (the most responsible and hardest task for any pet owner)...so for the first time in 25 yrs I am without a male Airedale. For over 25 yrs I bred and showed both in Conformation and obedience. My first Airedale was Katio-O; hence, the kennel name of Katiaire.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Wednesday, January 24, 2007 - 05:20 pm:

Kathy, you have my sypathy in the passing of your pet.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Wednesday, January 24, 2007 - 05:34 pm:

Kathy, I had to do that with the Cocker that I adopted from Animal Control. That was 4 years ago and every morning when I get up I go to his picture on the fridge and let him know I still love him. The hardest thing to do when you have a pet is to decide what the best thing would be to do when you know they are not happy. Just remember; ALL DOGS GO TO HEAVEN because they deserve it. (Cats too)

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Wednesday, January 24, 2007 - 06:07 pm:

Kathy, I am so sorry to hear of your loss of your Airedale. I'm sure that your dogs are to you like mine are to me: they are very much a part of my family. We have had to put a few of ours down over many years, and it is really hard! My heart goes out to you!

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Wednesday, January 24, 2007 - 06:18 pm:

Sometimes I think that my Westie, Joey, loves me more than my husband does. He's not as picky when it comes time to eat and he always lets me know that I'm the best! Also, with Joey, there's no laundry, no cooking special meals and no picking what he wants to watch on TV. He even lets me watch "The Golden Girls". Now that's a good friend!

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Wednesday, January 24, 2007 - 06:22 pm:

Kathy, I also would like to say how sorry I am to hear of your Airedale's passing. We have raised Scottish Terriers for 20 yrs. now. Our last Scotty we put down due to cancer was 13. Two days before we said our "goodbye's" Otis gave the meter reader lady a whirl around the yard. On that day we never would have thought what we were going to do in two days, it was his last hurrah, I guess he was telling us our decision would be ok.

By Kathy P. (Katiaire) on Wednesday, January 24, 2007 - 07:28 pm:

Thank you all for your kind thoughts. It is never an easy decision, but a very important one to be made.
JanieT, I think it is characteristic of terriers to mask their pain. By the time they let you know there is something wrong, you're in BIG trouble.
The only reason I can let them go is because I know someday we'll meet again at the Rainbow Bridge...and what a great time we will have.

By k j (Kathiscc) on Wednesday, January 24, 2007 - 08:50 pm:

Wizard was my Airedale, too.

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Thursday, January 25, 2007 - 08:53 am:

I have seen a really nice plaque that says:

Heaven -- where all the dogs (or cats) that you have loved will be waiting at the gate.

It will be a nice reunion.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Thursday, January 25, 2007 - 09:34 am:

This is what Weedy's grave marker says:

If tears could build a stairway,
and memories a lane,
I'd walk right up to Heaven
and bring you home again.

I miss my Cocker Spaniel.

By k j (Kathiscc) on Thursday, January 25, 2007 - 02:36 pm:

rainbow bridge 2 Just this side of Heaven, is a place called RAINBOW BRIDGE.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to RAINBOW BRIDGE. There are meadows and hills for all our special friends, so that they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water, and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals that have been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. The bright eyes are intent; the eager body quivers. Suddenly, he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life, but never absent from your heart.
Then, you cross RAINBOW BRIDGE TOGETHER........

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Thursday, January 25, 2007 - 02:45 pm:

kj, that brought tears to my eyes and somehow I feel in my heart that it's true.

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Thursday, January 25, 2007 - 03:27 pm:

Dang it! You made me cry.

By k j (Kathiscc) on Thursday, January 25, 2007 - 06:03 pm:

Sorry, ladies, didn't mean to make you cry. I'm so sad. I know in my heart my kids (dogs, cats, bunnies, etc.) will be waiting for me. I miss Wizard so much. He was so ill at the end. He was taking 20 pills a day for all his problems (gall bladder, liver, food allergies, and finally congestive heart failure), he was so much a part of my life, now there's this big hole, you know? Up until the last day or so, he was still Wizard, wanting to go outside with his sisters, wagging when you spoke to him, but he just filled up with fluid as his heart let him down. He wasn't having any fun anymore. And I am just glad it is what we can do for them. My mom was in a coma for 6 months before she died and I wish we could have ended it for her.
