Dean Woodbeck (Dwoodbeck) on Monday, January 15, 2007 - 08:16 am:

That's the view coming into Dollar Bay from the south. The sign is actually an inset -- what you are looking at, I believe, is Horner Flooring, maker of hardwood flooring and well-known for providing the floor used in the NBA All-Star games and the NCAA championships.

Finally some snow---with another 3-5" expected today. It was like a postcard on the cross country trails yesterday, with that light lake effect snow gently floating to the ground.

By dlp (Babyseal) on Monday, January 15, 2007 - 08:18 am:

Good Morning. Snowing here in the Keweenaw.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Monday, January 15, 2007 - 08:21 am:

Mornin' raining here in Illinois. No snow in sight, sigh.

By Erica - Florida Keys (Erica) on Monday, January 15, 2007 - 08:34 am:

Morning...no snow here,either...just warmth and sunshine.

By joanne sherick (Shedoesnails) on Monday, January 15, 2007 - 08:36 am:

Good Morning. we have about 6 inches here in mid michigan.

By Charlotte, Mishawaka, IN (Charlotte61) on Monday, January 15, 2007 - 08:44 am:

Morning from Mishawaka, IN. It is still raining but at least the ice didn't make it here. LES expected this evening and overnight.
No school today for MLK Day. I'm trying to get everything ready for my trip with the basketball team to Toronto on Friday.

By Tom Karjala (Tom) on Monday, January 15, 2007 - 09:15 am:

Snow and a bit windy here in GB. Probably get 3 or 4 inche before it is over.
The ski flying hill near Bessemer is still there. I talked tof a guy from Topaz last week and he told me it is too windy to safely fly the long distances. I don't know if that is the real scoop or not.
Anyone know where Topaz is locate??

By k j (Kathiscc) on Monday, January 15, 2007 - 09:38 am:

Morning. We got about 2 inches of snow on top of the inch of freezing rain here in beautiful Marengo, Il. last night.

By P W (Uppal) on Monday, January 15, 2007 - 09:59 am:

Topaz is a little town on M-28 in the western U.P. Don't blink or you will miss it! :)

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Monday, January 15, 2007 - 10:15 am:

All our trees are covered in ice, very pretty. Luckily roads not as bad as expected.

By jmac (Jillann) on Monday, January 15, 2007 - 10:28 am:

Here is Alexis IL we are still getting more ice and sleet so I would love the snow and I am not a snow person. I assume that makes me a Summer UP wanna be - not a true snow loving UP wanna be

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Monday, January 15, 2007 - 10:35 am:

Dollar Bay looking down from what was called New Road Hill. For those of us from $Bay dose inset mean if you was there the sign would not? Over the top of the U is where i grew up.To the left of the sign is a trail we called Bush Trail,a small path the melting snow took, what a ride down on a sled that was!Could talk alot more about that, but must get going to the Chiropractor for my weekly adjustment from all the stupid stunts i did when i was much younger. We get to old soon and to smart late.

By David C Cloutier (Dccloutier) on Monday, January 15, 2007 - 11:07 am:

By any chance does anyone know who Dan White is? He sent me the following message:

Dan White [EMAIL ADDRESS REMOVED]

Please stop your preaching of such nonsense!

I know many weather experts that disagree with your crappy knowledge.

And........don't use this forum to preach your crap.

Otherwise, I will make you look stupid and show the world the fraud you are!

Got it?!?!!!!

I don't remember ever seeing him post in any of the forums. Apparently he was a bit upset regarding the information I posted concerning global warming last week. Carrying around that much anger is not healthy. I certainly hope he gets over it.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Monday, January 15, 2007 - 11:19 am:

David Cloutier ....... I can't believe he sent you that! There are some sickos out there. If he thinks your posts are stupid then why did he read them? Hey, maybe he's a disgruntled weather man!

By Danbury (Danbury) on Monday, January 15, 2007 - 11:41 am:

Well proven data Mr. White offers there, I must say. Were I this world, I'd immediately stop turning confronted with such overwhelming facts! :)
Sorry to hear about this, David. I've received a very few mails like that years ago, but nowadays, should there be any, they disappear in my spam filter.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Monday, January 15, 2007 - 11:41 am:

Our kids have a snow day here in mid-Michigan. We have about 6" of snow so far today. Old man winter came back.

Some are saying that we may pay for the warm weather that we had in December with a very cold and possibly snowy last half of winter. (Check out AccuWeather, article on Winter Returns with a Vengeance.)

By David C Cloutier (Dccloutier) on Monday, January 15, 2007 - 11:53 am:

It is just too bad that reasonable people can't have a reasonable discussion about a topic as important as the world we live in. There seems to be an awful lot of "I'm right and you're wrong" and "If you don't do as I say, I will destroy you" in the world. I wonder why that is... and what does that say about the world we are creating?

By Happy to be in the U.P. (Lahelo) on Monday, January 15, 2007 - 11:58 am:

David C Cloutier (Dccloutier) I am sorry there are people out there like that in the world. He has no right to do that to you. I agree with you Joanie (gonnabeayooper) there are alot of sickos out there in this world. Why can't everyone just read it and let it go at that? Its not a debate of any kind that is for sure. Just putting facts of what they think is right. Not out to hurt anyone.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Monday, January 15, 2007 - 12:57 pm:

David, I was not interested in your postings nor of the others who may not agree with you. I just was not interested in the particular subject so I just overlooked them and went on to the next posting.I however agree that you have the right to expound on any theory you may have, and I will try my best to defend your right to express your opinions. There seems to be certain people who if you don't agree with them will do whatever they can to stop you from being able to post here. I was a target at one time so I know how you feel.

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Monday, January 15, 2007 - 12:59 pm:

David, Sadly some people believe free speach only applies to themselves. Luckily just because they speak doesn't mean we have to listen (for the disrespectful ones anyhow.) I read your posts and they were not at all offensive and the different opinions were interesting to take in. There are so many factors as to what makes our world the way it is.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Monday, January 15, 2007 - 01:00 pm:

I hit post before I was finished, old age I guess. When there is a post that doesn't interest me I just skip on down to the next one. We all don't have to agree or disagree with all the post.

By Margaret, Amarillo TX (Margaret) on Monday, January 15, 2007 - 01:03 pm:

Amen to the above responses. David, you have a right to express an opinion, or facts as they have been handed to you.

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Monday, January 15, 2007 - 01:03 pm:

Mikie hit that nail on the head.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Monday, January 15, 2007 - 01:05 pm:

Thank you Brooke, at my age it is hard to swing the hammer and hit the nail.Hope that I drove in the idea that I was trying to.

By Tom Karjala (Tom) on Monday, January 15, 2007 - 01:16 pm:

Good, P W, I didn't think anyone would know of Topaz. I only saw the sign when I drove west from Bruce Crossing last summer. Didn't see a house, etc.
I thought this page was for chatting about various things. No limit or restriction on views. Well, we don't want profanity, of course.
I say to all of you keep up your flow of information. We all are adult enough to be able to ignore that which we do not agree with. Or, respond but in a civilized manner.

By David C Cloutier (Dccloutier) on Monday, January 15, 2007 - 01:25 pm:

I appreciate all of your comments. Mike, that is how it should be. If you aren't interested in something then just skip it. The bottom line is, the free exchange of ideas is necessary in order for a democracy to work. If we start to restrict what people can say, we are in big trouble!

By Daveofmohawk (Daveofmohawk) on Monday, January 15, 2007 - 02:02 pm:

I think that debate is a healthy thing for all of us. I always seem to learn something from a good debate. Of course we have to respect one anothers opinions and not get sarcastic.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Monday, January 15, 2007 - 02:28 pm:

Not to change the subject, and a very good one, I might add, but, IT'S SNOWING IN ILLINOIS! It's only flurries but at least drab, gray and ugly is turning to a beautiful pure, clean, white!

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Monday, January 15, 2007 - 02:43 pm:

We have about 6 inches of clean white snow here in mid-Michigan. The kids love it, not only to sled & play in, but as a way to make spending money, by snowblowing and shoveling neighbors' driveways & sidewalks. :-)

Also, the high school kids had their first day of final exams canceled today because of the snow day, so most of them are very happy about that. :-)

By Erica - Florida Keys (Erica) on Monday, January 15, 2007 - 03:06 pm:

Whoever Dan White may be he isn't important enough to worry about. He ought to be ashamed of the e-mail he sent to you,David.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Monday, January 15, 2007 - 03:25 pm:

We know who Dan White is, someone that we shouldn't waste our time worrying about, just a bad apple trying to spoil the whole bunch. Wonder what he does when the media reports something he doesn't like!

By David C Cloutier (Dccloutier) on Monday, January 15, 2007 - 03:43 pm:

Tom Karjala:
When I was growing up in Royal Oak. MI we lived a couple doors down from a family with the same last name as you. The dad (everyone called him Karj) was from the copper country. The mom was Betty (she died of cancer) There were four kids: Mark, Keith, Kevin, and (I can't remember the youngest)... must be my old age...

Any chance you might be related?

By Charles In Esky (Charlesinesky) on Monday, January 15, 2007 - 03:46 pm:

What does Mr. White do when he hears stuff he doesn't like?
Even Pres. Bush seems to have admitted to global warming. There was something in the news last night about his gvt. getting ready to register polar bears as endangered because global warming was reducing the amount of pack ice in the Arctic.

By FJL (Langoman) on Monday, January 15, 2007 - 03:50 pm:

What a great country this is. Everyone has an opinion, and right or wrong they can express it.........

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Monday, January 15, 2007 - 03:51 pm:

David, I was very interested in what you had to say about global warming. I read every e-mail that everybody wrote and weighed them all. When I don't enjoy the conversation of the day, I skip to the ones that I do enjoy or that I am interested in. Like Mikie, I've been a target also. People who don't like what you have to say because you don't agree with them. It's ridiculous and we're not in grade school any more. We're adults with our own minds and it's not like if we read your comment we're going to agree with it until we read the next one. That's kid stuff and this guy needs to wake up and smell the coffee. Continue with what you enjoy. If I don't like what you're saying, I'll skip you.

By David Soumis (Davesou) on Monday, January 15, 2007 - 05:37 pm:

refraining..refraining...holding it in...I'm turning blue...
NOPE...I won't say a word.

There are a lot of cranky people, aren't there?
Probably didn't get his desired gift for xmas.

Well, that was pretty mild

By Tom Karjala (Tom) on Monday, January 15, 2007 - 05:46 pm:

Dave C. Yes, that was my brother. On Hoffman St?
All from the Hancock area. Now Mark has lost his wife, Cindy, to liver cancer. Keith passed away some years ago---very young. 37 or so at most.
Did you live very close to their house? Seems there was a park not far away.

By maija in Commerce Township (Maija) on Monday, January 15, 2007 - 06:05 pm:

I continue to applaud the editors for giving us this site and keeping it "family friendly." Good debate, as others have said, is healthy.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Monday, January 15, 2007 - 06:06 pm:

How very sad,
That there are people that bad,
They read what you say,
And it ruins their day,
Won't you just give it up,
And shut the heck up!
If you have nothing nice to say,
Go check out Ebay.
Let the Yoopers have their day!
Wrote this for you, Mr. White,
Who sure doesn't seem quite Right!
Get lost, go to bed and have a rotten good night!

By k j (Kathiscc) on Monday, January 15, 2007 - 06:07 pm:

David C.- I can't believe someone would send you an email to blast you on anything you said here. Not man enough to say it in front of all of us? What is this world coming to? Maybe he was afraid he would get kicked off of here forever for attacking you. And he should.

By k j (Kathiscc) on Monday, January 15, 2007 - 06:08 pm:

P.S. Did you forward the emails to Pasty? Maybe you should.

By David C Cloutier (Dccloutier) on Monday, January 15, 2007 - 06:13 pm:

Tom:
Yes, Hoffman Street. We lived in the second house north of your brother's family (at 1206 Hoffman) until early 1967 when we moved to Clawson. When we lived there, Betty was my mom's (Alice) best friend. They were a really nice family! I am sorry to hear that Keith died and that Mark lost his wife. Mark was several years older than me (I'm 49 now). He was sort of a hero to me. I always thought he was really cool! The park (Lincoln park) was two doors south of thier house. A retired fireman (Mr. Shoemaker I think) lived between your brother's family and park.

Nice to visit with you Tom. Take care!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Monday, January 15, 2007 - 09:56 pm:

Way to hold it in Dave. I'm proud of you! LOL

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Monday, January 15, 2007 - 11:17 pm:

Well, I'm back from Lower Michigan. Just in time to deal with the huge ice storm they are predicting in Houston the next couple days..... global warming my %$#&!!, ;-)

Seriously though, this is a forum, and a very good one at that. Everyone should have the right to post their opinion, no matter how ridiculous it might be. My only concern is when it gets mean spririted and personal. This should be a fun place to come, not a "hotbed" of attacks!!! I can commiserate with David C.; I've posted several items on here and have gotten some really scathing emails in return.

By David S. (Yooperdfs) on Tuesday, January 16, 2007 - 12:16 am:

Well, here's my 2 cents..........the earth has been going through warming and cooling cycles from day one. No need to get into a twist; we have another ice age coming in a few thousand years if we don't disagree each other to death.

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Tuesday, January 16, 2007 - 12:29 am:

Hey is my name lite up now so i can get mail from here? Maybe i should be carefull what i ask for.Good to see more pictures on the profile.

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Tuesday, January 16, 2007 - 12:44 am:
