Trail conditions were very good when Jonathan Hopper caught a shot of this snowmobiler eight years ago. Today ... well, not enough snow on the trails for the machines.

Good moring to all! Very foggy here 25 miles east of Lansing. Beginning to lift now. Really weird weather we are having isn't it? May have to mow the lawn on New Years day! Grandson is going nuts because his snowmobile is not being used.

Well the Tech Huskies lost another GLI, they have not won the tournement since 1980. I was hoping they would put a woopin on U of M and then beat State, but not this year!

By Margaret, Amarillo TX (Margaret) on Saturday, December 30, 2006 - 09:43 am:

Cool! we're still waiting for our "blizzard."

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Saturday, December 30, 2006 - 09:45 am:

What a shame that the trails aren't like that now. I don't think we should pretend that global warming isn't responsible for this eerie weather.

Happy New Year to you too Jarmo and thank you for the website. I always wondered where St. Olaf lived. Beautiful castles.

By Liz B (Lizidaho) on Saturday, December 30, 2006 - 10:46 am:

Please take a moment: 19 yr old MN lad died in snowmobile avalanche at Lions Head near West Yellowsone MT yesterday. No Avalance peeps. Please Please don't come out here without them!!!

By Cotton (Cotton) on Saturday, December 30, 2006 - 11:46 am:

Alot of businesses in the UP are really hurting with the lack of snow. We went past Marquette Mountain the other day & there were a lot of people (kids are on vacation). It's a good thing they had their snowmakers going to make the snow. But yesterday we did get about 3 inches of snow here. Now it's beginning to look like winter.

By Tom Karjala (Tom) on Saturday, December 30, 2006 - 12:28 pm:

To think I did not make the trip to the CC this week because all the motels were booked. Heikki Lunda did not cooperate and that cut down on snow activities.
My Texas family is in the CC looking for some snow for X country skiing-----I wonder if they found some.
Morris, Il, when you retire how far north do you plan on? Rockford, Il??? Ha.

By Ms. Katie (Mskatie) on Saturday, December 30, 2006 - 12:38 pm:

Good morning! And Liz may I ask what an avalance peep is exactly? Are you getting in any skiing yourself? And to cotton, it's too bad about all the businesses UP there who are suffering for lack of snow and cold. Isn't ice fishing pretty big around there. I know some of our usual fellow Winter Texans from Wisconsin talk so much about their areas ice fishing. Healthy and safe New Years to all the pasty cammers. And a good 2007 to all make this site avaiable for us.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Saturday, December 30, 2006 - 02:56 pm:

Tom, can't go to Rockford, they don't know what a Pasty is!! Gonna go to dat der Keewenaw or dat town called Ontonagon. Pastyland, see you in a few years!

By Liz B (Lizidaho) on Saturday, December 30, 2006 - 06:19 pm:

Avalanche peeps: A transmitter that allows others to find you in an avalanche.

By Cotton (Cotton) on Saturday, December 30, 2006 - 10:53 pm:

Ms Katie, there is not much ice on the lakes around here. And if there is, it's too thin for ice fishing. One man drown somewhere in the UP (Skanee I think) a couple of weeks ago because of the thin ice. So there's really not much winter activities going on. Wonder how the Tech winter carnival will be, hopefully they'll get enough snow before then. No snow today & was in the 30's.
