If it weren't for the bright orange legs and feet of this Mallard, you might not even notice him in this photo by Tom Cook. The duck looks like he's either checking out his reflection in the water, wondering who the other duck is, or like he's trying to decide if he should get his feet wet or not! Whatever the case may be, he's one colorful creature against the backdrop of U.P. snow and water!

Beautiful shot! That is one tough duckie!

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Thursday, December 14, 2006 - 08:34 am:

This is clearly a male duck who is lost and is too proud to ask for directions.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Thursday, December 14, 2006 - 08:44 am:

Cindy, are you sure he's lost and not just waiting for Mrs. to hurry up and get ready?
Mr. Deb

awesome!

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Thursday, December 14, 2006 - 08:50 am:

LOL, Gone2long.

I was wondering if he was debating whether he really wanted to dive in? Is it worth getting all cold & wet for a snack?

It is a cool picture.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Thursday, December 14, 2006 - 08:56 am:

Mr. Duckie isn't lost at all, he's waiting for Mrs. Duckie. She went to the store for soup and quackers!

I'm with Deb S. I love this photo.

By David C Cloutier (Dccloutier) on Thursday, December 14, 2006 - 09:53 am:

Ah, but Cindy, as a male, he can never be lost... merely a wee bit spatially disoriented on occasion.

By David C Cloutier (Dccloutier) on Thursday, December 14, 2006 - 09:57 am:

Now the female, who as you will note is nowhere to be seen, she is clearly lost...

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Thursday, December 14, 2006 - 10:18 am:

Actually, I think he dropped the remote in the water and the Mighty Ducks are on the tube.

By jefflarae (Jefflarae) on Thursday, December 14, 2006 - 10:24 am:

Clouds and sky looks like snow! Maybe you lucky folks will get a white christmas this year after all, while all the rest of us will just have to look at dormant grass.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Thursday, December 14, 2006 - 12:11 pm:

Cindy, Mr Duckie can get another remote and just put it on his "bill"!

By John Noble (Afinnishpole) on Thursday, December 14, 2006 - 12:52 pm:

This of course brings up the big debate in Minnesota. Is it Duck Duck Goose or as the Minnesotans claim, Duck Duck Greyduck??

By Rowdy (Roudymi) on Thursday, December 14, 2006 - 02:02 pm:

Speaking of Minnesota and ducks, there was an article in a newspaper from there years ago of a fellow that got caught by the Game Warden (sorta dates the article) for getting more than his limit. Seems he was soaking corn in whiskey and spreading it on the ice behind his house. After the ducks got all "liquored" up he just walked out and had his pick of the flock. When they arrested him he had a bunch in the freezer and a couple dozen sobering up on the back porch.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Thursday, December 14, 2006 - 03:50 pm:

Rowdy, that is one funny story! Would that be called "poaching"? Bet those ducks really waddled!

By sandra harrington (Sandra) on Thursday, December 14, 2006 - 05:43 pm:

He looks like my daugters pet duck Norbert. Could you ask him his name and if he is from Ohio. LOL sandra

By steve juratich (Steve) on Thursday, December 14, 2006 - 07:16 pm:

do I see a duck sitting on the nose of a wolf?

By Happy to be in the U.P. (Lahelo) on Thursday, December 14, 2006 - 08:10 pm:

Almost looks like Mr. Duck was placed there by mother nature? Very nice picture.
