Eight years ago, the Pasty Cam captured Jack Foster, former Calumet Police Chief and local historian. He stopped in to visit Still Waters and is chatting here with Margaret Hogback.

The weekend is going to bring some blustery conditions in the Keweenaw, with high winds and a chance of snow in the higher elevations.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Friday, October 27, 2006 - 06:58 am:

Morning!

By Tim in Oscoda (Timmer280) on Friday, October 27, 2006 - 07:40 am:

Mornin' All!

Happy Friday! (although I'm dyin' after that game last nite

Please Tigers...Wake Up...that long layoff lost all their momentum...

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Friday, October 27, 2006 - 07:49 am:

Tim in Oscoda, I was totally afraid that would happen. As soon as they won I said the layoff would hurt them. They don't even look like the same team.

By Kenty (Dashamo) on Friday, October 27, 2006 - 08:11 am:

Tim & Deb--Yep, They're playing like the team that lost 119 games three years ago instead of AL Champs. But even if they lose the series they have nothing to be ashamed about. Going from the laughing stock of the league to pennant winners in three years is a great achievement. I'd like to see a repeat of 1968, but I don't think that will happen this time. So maybe for the last time this year----GO TIGERS!!!!!!!

Kenty! AMEN!!!

By FJL (Langoman) on Friday, October 27, 2006 - 09:04 am:

I just don't remember Deb saying that.....:) It might not be the long layoff, maybe the Card's are just a better team..........

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Friday, October 27, 2006 - 09:17 am:

FJL, I didn't say it on pasty. Our family was talking about it and we had said that the layoff probably wasn't a good thing. Maybe the Cards are a better team. I just think the Tigers aren't the team they were against the Yankees & A's.

By Uncle Chuck @ Little Betsy (Unclechuck) on Friday, October 27, 2006 - 09:40 am:

It's not the layoff, this young team not having the post season experience is the problem, they're gripping to tight, and beating themselves, if they can find away to win tonight, I like our chances back in Detroit!

Regardless, it's been a very successful season!

By Ms. Katie (Mskatie) on Friday, October 27, 2006 - 09:46 am:

Altho I'm not especially a Tigers fan I sure was hoping they'd do better. My graandparents of Hubbell were big fans when I was a kid, so GO TIGERS for them. By the by have any of my emails gotten thru to Deb or Renee or the bunch. Hope a friend can fix my horrible computer problems for me this weekend.

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Friday, October 27, 2006 - 10:12 am:

One more week until my daughter's wedding! Hope I'll be ready and organized. She may be singing, but if she is it will be a surprise. How did we plan to invite 150 and end up with 180? We tried to keep the count down. Wish us luck! Signed: Momzilla of the Bride

By Randall Ollila (Rwolli) on Friday, October 27, 2006 - 10:16 am:

Morning All.
Baseball has been very very good to us this year. Has generated excitement that has not been seen in almost 20 yrs. Speaking of games Hancock vs Calumet in the first round of State football playoffs tonight along with many other regional games. Support your local H S team whichever that may be. I'll have to sit on the fence for the above mentioned game, too many family and friends in both locations. Enjoy the day everyone!!

By kathie Murto (Murtomania) on Friday, October 27, 2006 - 10:49 am:

GO TIGERS!! I will keep up the hope that they can do it. I havent given up on them yet.

By Smfwixom (Trollperson) on Friday, October 27, 2006 - 01:48 pm:

Kenty (Dashamo) - I would like to see a repeat of 1968, too, and sure hope they can do it again! Go Tigers!!!

By Cotton (Cotton) on Friday, October 27, 2006 - 02:05 pm:

Keep the faith on the Tigers, they'll pull thru.
I'm pulling for Calumet tonight.Sorry Hancock fans. How bout those Lakes? No team a few years ago after Ron Warner left & now look at them. GO LAKES!!! Rah,rah, rah!!! LOL

Havn't heard from you Kate.

By stix (Stixoutwest) on Friday, October 27, 2006 - 02:41 pm:

Capt. Paul. You gave us a great geology lesson not long ago. Can't seem to find it!I am designing a new series using basalt stones, beach glass and fresh water pearls. I really like the look and feel of the jewelry and am quite excited about it! At any rate, people love the story behind the art. I have a good handle on the beach glass, pearls pretty much speak for themselves but could use a little help with the stone. Again, my jewelry designs start with things I find, primarily from our family beach up there. Can you give me a few lines of interest that I can share with people? Anything pertaining to the UP is even better! Maybe how old the stone is, is it a common stone or are there particular properties that only the UP Basalt stone has etc. etc. A brief over-view would be really appreciated...in plain English!!!
Thanks, Stix

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Friday, October 27, 2006 - 04:03 pm:

Stix--I think I remember that Capt. Paul and Dr, Nat were going to
a geology conference this week--either in Boston or
Philadelphia,so don't be disappointed if they don't have a chance to
check Pasty Cam for a couple of days. I would like to read the
answere to your
question too.

By stix (Stixoutwest) on Friday, October 27, 2006 - 05:12 pm:

Thanks Kosk. I'll reprint my question early in the week!! Make the best of your weekend!

By Liz B (Lizidaho) on Friday, October 27, 2006 - 05:20 pm:

Isn't the Tech vs Northern Game this weekend? Or,
did I miss it while in MN last weekend? Go Tech just in case.
Katie, I did get a quick note from you about the Art Show you are preparing. If it is this weekend, you will be a very busy lady!

By Mel, Kansas (Mehollop) on Friday, October 27, 2006 - 05:34 pm:

Liz - you missed the Tech/Northern game last weekend. We (Tech, that is) whomped 'em! Score was 42-14. Go Huskies!

The stuff that happens once in a while - now I'm an uncle.

By maija in Commerce Township (Maija) on Friday, October 27, 2006 - 06:16 pm:

Danbury has welcomed beautiful little Justine into his family. He will be making a road trip from Germany to France where his sister and new neice are.

He's a young dude and doesn't even know yet....

By Ray Laakaniemi (Rlaakan) on Friday, October 27, 2006 - 07:37 pm:

What Tiger fans are missing is that they have the best young pitching staff in baseball, and they have a couple more pitchers in the minors. Plus Cameron Maybin -- remember the name. The point is the future looks good even if last night did not look so good.

By Cotton (Cotton) on Friday, October 27, 2006 - 09:19 pm:

Congratulations Danbury on being an Uncle. Enjoy your visit with your niece.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Friday, October 27, 2006 - 10:15 pm:

Tigers are down again. I feel so badly for them cuz they worked so hard to get there. They have nothing to feel bad about though. They did their best and as Unclechuck says, they're very young and will have another shot. Either way, I'm proud of the Tigers. I've been a fan since I was old enough to listen to them on the radio with good old Ernie Harwell.

By Clayton Majava (Claymajava) on Saturday, October 28, 2006 - 02:09 am:

Hello,
I not sure if this is the correct place to ask my question. First, I am really hungry for some pasties right now! It's only been 20 years!
My name is Clayton Majava I live in California. I'm 61. My father was Charles Majava, He was born in Traprock Valley (1915) His parents Gustav and Elisebeth had a farm there. I remember visiting them after they retired in Mohawk or Fulton.
My mother was Kathryn Merila (Majava)from Atlantic Mine/Painesdale.The last time I was in the U.P. was for her services in Calumet 1985.
Does anyone remember them?

Hope to hear from you,
Clayton Majava

By Randall Ollila (Rwolli) on Saturday, October 28, 2006 - 06:55 am:

Clayton.
It is always good to hear from transplanted yoopers. If you go back to Pasty.com home page you will find the link to order pasties for your cravings, and you can also visit the link for the new Pasty Central Express at the Hut where they are made and shipped from. Will have to ask the Mother in-law if she remembers your folks. Enjoy your day!
