We can double our pleasure while taking a fall color tour, with a couple of shots snapped by Linda Mulvey. While here closing up their camp for the winter, Linda and her husband Al were treated to a mirrored view reflecting off Lake Ongie, which is located near Toivola. With the steam just rising above the water like that, it adds a bit of mystery to the photos, while blurring the line where the water and the land join together. It also indicates the cooling temperatures we've been experiencing now that fall is really in the air!

Pasty Central has re-started pasty production in the new pasty kitchen in Kearsarge. You can place your order on the web. The next available shipping date is October 16.

The Hut Inn will open on Monday (October 9), with most of the old favorites on the menu, as well as some new entrees. The Hut will serve from 11 am - 9 pm seven days a week.

Looking at Sharon's cam, the sunrise is beautiful. I would love to be drinking my coffee on her deck right now.

By Sheri (Sheri) on Friday, October 6, 2006 - 08:03 am:

Too cold to have coffee on my deck! Only 23 degrees with a white ground at my place 6 miles from Ontonagon.

Too bad you didn't tell us where you are - we can't tell from your email address!

By Ken Scheibach (Kscheibach) on Friday, October 6, 2006 - 09:54 am:

Beautiful and interesting. I saved the photos in my computer and then flipped them. In the second photo you really can't tell the sky from the water. Flipped it creates a rather ominous looking sky where you can imagine lake effect at any moment :-)

We are headed up to Copper Habor for the weekend (from Iron Mountain) Can not wait to see all the BEAUTIFUL color's.

Mary:
Very nice pictures this morning, but you are making me very homesick... I went on GoogleEarth to try to see where in Hancock the Algolake would unload, but I couldn't see enough detail to know for sure. Is the dock east or west of the bridge? Are there any webcams that show the area?

By Michael (Thomasbus8516) on Friday, October 6, 2006 - 10:27 am:

Did anyone get to see the freighter last night after dark? I was driving home on M-203 last night, heading from Hancock to McLain, and I spotted a bunch of lights ahead. When I got to a spot where you could see the canal clearly from the road (without houses or trees in the way) I was greeted with the gorgeous sight of a freighter all lit up! It looked like it was heading towards Houghton/Hancock. This was about 8:30 pm.

I haven't gotten to see them at night up close before, and I was truly amazed at how beautiful that could be!

By JAD, Oscar, MI (Jandalq) on Friday, October 6, 2006 - 10:31 am:

Toured up to Copper Harbor on Wednesday. There's a beautiful "gold tunnel" a few miles before Gay; good color on the 5-Mile Point Road. Colors on Brockway are muted. Did see 3 freighters and Isle Royale was about as clear as I've ever seen it. Brockway was so crowded there was no place to park. I recommend driving down M-203 from Calumet. The new route provides an almost continuous view of The Lake. Toured through Atlantic Mine, Obenhoff, the Covered Road, and Liminga yesterday. The Oskar hills and hills in Houghton and Hancock are gorgeous, at peak. Today's photos are calendar quality.

What's good on the menu for Lunch/Dinner?

By Brian Davis (Bigcity) on Friday, October 6, 2006 - 11:09 am:

WOW!!! It's already 80 degrees this morning here in Dallas.... but the warmth still pails in comparison to the scenery of today's pics.

Did I say WOW!!!

By k j (Kathiscc) on Friday, October 6, 2006 - 11:38 am:

Great Photos! Haven't had a frost here yet.(Northeastern Illinois)

By Alison P (Ricelakealison) on Friday, October 6, 2006 - 11:40 am:

Brian, you said WOW, and that’s what I think the first photo should be! WOW!

My better half is up for the weekend, I told him to soak up all the color, peace, and clairity for me!

I sure wish the bridge cam were working, I would have loved to see the freighter!

I'm looking at the calendar to plan our next pasty feast!

By Richard Wieber (Dickingrayling) on Friday, October 6, 2006 - 01:49 pm:

Michael Back in the thirtys and fortys we would drive down to big Portage Lake on a stormy day/night to see the big boats. That was before they had radar and good navigation "stuff". When there was a storm on the big lake the freighters would line up in big Portage to sit out the rough water. Remember seeing as many as 5 or 6 boats with all their dec and cabin light on. It was a wonderful sight in those times.

By Tara Van Dyke (Lighthousefam) on Friday, October 6, 2006 - 03:29 pm:

How's the color around Escanaba and eastward along Lake Michigan? We're driving up for fall color (I hope) this weekend.

By Ken ja Mimi from da UP (Kenjamimi) on Friday, October 6, 2006 - 10:10 pm:

Tara Van Dyke, Mimi and I were on a bus tour on Tuesday to Mackinac Island and the colors along the lake were very nice. Very bright in places. It was a very nice trip. The island was pretty, too, with colors. The fudge is very good also. :o)
