This shot from eight years ago shows the early morning dew on the grassy shore of Lac LaBelle. Plenty of early morning dew -- some call it rain -- this morning in the Keweenaw. In between showers yesterday, the sun came out and the colors were magnificent.

Can't wait....I will be up there on Saturday for one week. Have not been in the Keweenaw in October since I was a real small child, so I will enjoy every minute of it. So much to do and see, so little time...............

Kosk: very interesting that you sent a msg to me yesterday that you meant for Marsha, because I was thinking of responding to your msg about Ruth and Ralph Mannisto, but had decided not to clutter up these airwaves. You must be psychic!

Thanks for the B'Day greetings! Had to believe that I am in the middle of my 8th decade all ready. What's the saying;"If I had known I was going to live this long, I would have taken better care of myself!" Good to see Triton is back in business.

Happy Birthday Paul, that's a great quote from Waylon Jennings!

From today's travel unraveled newsletter of the Chicago Tribune

The colors of Copper Country
The Keweenaw Peninsula in Michigan is gorgeous, especially in leaf-peeping season. But what differentiates the Keweenaw is that this was Copper Country. Dreams happened in this place. http://www.chicagotribune.com/travel/features/travelnews/sns-trvmain2-wk1,0,2206823.story

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Thursday, September 28, 2006 - 03:16 pm:

You got to laugh when a major metropolitan area calls the Upper Peninsula "a decomposing westbound shark" and the Keweenaw "the decomposing dorsal fin jutting into Lake Superior". I also see they haven't figured out yet that there is NO Lake Medford in the Keweenaw...... I guess some city-slickers will never learn!! ;-)

By Richard A. Fields (Cherokeeyooper) on Thursday, September 28, 2006 - 04:02 pm:

I do like the imagery of a west bound shark, but I can't agree with the decomposing part. The article called the Quincy Hoist a boondoggle, which is inaccurate. While expensive, it did increase productivity while it operated, and at 36 mph max speed, made many more runs in a day than its predecessor. I used to be able to quote the stats (60 ft diamater at center tapering to a 30 (or was it 16?) at the ends, etc., but it has all faded in the years since I guided there. Overall, the article seemed pretty patronizing.

Something very familiar about that article, see my previous post (includes the text of my email of Mon 2006-08-21 17:57 to Alan Solomon): By FRNash/PHX, AZ (Frnash) on Monday, August 21, 2006 - 09:37 pm:

Alan Solomon's very prompt (!) reply, in part, dated Mon 2006-08-21 19:06):

Quote:

"Frank, Frank, Frank...

Screwed up on the lake. No explanation. Just a case of seeing the name and the fingers disobeying.

You see a bunny? Good for you and the folks who want to see bunnies. Bunnies are cute. I like bunnies. Thumper was a bunny. "If you can't say something nice..."

No one south of Petoskey sees a rodent, Frank. It's a SHARK. Deal with it..

[minor deletion here -FRN]

I think -- and judging from the e-mails I've gotten from up there, Keweeneans seem to agree -- I did a decent job of portraying what makes it a special place. Positive stuff. Might even be good for business, though that's not my goal, and heaven knows it could use a little help...

Frankly, if I'd wanted to paint a totally realistic picture of the Keweenaw, you would have read about a peninsula that's economically depressed, full of empty storefronts (including in Houghton), dying businesses, job loss, etc. Instead, I put on selective blinders and described a place that, especially if you don't have to worry about making a living there, is a pretty good place to visit and spend money.

Sorry if I disappointed you. So it goes...

Regards,

Alan Solomon/Chicago Tribune"

Reading the DMG online and noticed that a Elsie Dulong passed away, and her son is Norman Jr (or Mickie) from Ferndale. Is this our Mickie that posts on this site?. (PS Two more days and I will be in the Keweenaw for a week. Yippee!!!!)

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Thursday, September 28, 2006 - 08:24 pm:

Carole, I am a cousin of Elsie and I spell my name with a capital L whereas that part of the family doesn't. I am from Hubbell and they are from Hancock. Hope that clears up any misunderstandings.

By Carole (Carole) on Thursday, September 28, 2006 - 09:19 pm:

Thanks for clearing this up and glad it wasn't your mom, but still sorry to hear of your cousins passing. And on another note, you have mentioned that your son in law last name is Ozanich. My maiden name was that, but unfortunately I did not know any of my relatives as my parents were divorced when I was very young. I probably will not be reading any posts after this as I am heading up to Eagle Harbor tomorrow for a week. Cannot wait, and don't care what the weather will be like, so long as I am there.

Carole I hope you are having a great time. No matter what time of the year it is. It is always great to visit ........I am lucky enough to live here. I love it wouldn't trade it for another place, ever! :)
