Our Sunday Shoebox Memory time machine transports us back half a century to this colorful Independence Day celebration in L'Anse, Michigan. It is part of a delightful slideshow by Clyde Elmblad recalling parades at both Baraga and L'Anse in 1953-54.

Parade tradition is still very much alive here in the U.P., starting with the PastyFest parade yesterday in Calumet. The list of towns with July 4th processions would fill up this page, which you are welcome to do (that's why we have scroll bars :o)

Marquette
Ishpeming
Big Bay
Republic
Michigamme...

...you get the idea. I wonder just how many towns in the U.P. have parades sceduled this year?

By the way, yesterday there was a 'virtual ribbon cutting' for a new web site devoted to Keweenaw ethnic history and web-accessible collection of historical photographs from the MTU Archives and Copper Country Historical Collections. The new site will help tell the story of immigrants to Copper Country. Stay tuned to Pasty Central for the link to this exciting new window to the past when it becomes available.

Have a pleasant and safe holiday :o)

South Range used to have a parade. Do they still?
That's where we used to go every year, but the last time I drove through there, it appears much has changed along the main drag...buildings gone, etc.

Don't forget the parade in Copper Harbor, followed by kids' games and food (I think) in the park, and fireworks over the harbor after dark (which means they start around 11:00). With any kind of luck, we won't have the pea-soup fog that covered up the fireworks last year...rolled in at 10:30 and rolled out at 12:30.

Anyway, come, see, and enjoy!

Eagle River used to have a 4th of July parade in the '50's. It wasn't very big, but they had one.

Sharon are you going to let your cam run late on the 4th so we can see the fireworks too?
