Only 10 days old and the Pasty Cam was on the prowl for scenes of interest in the Keweenaw back in '98. On his way up US-41 Jonathan happened to glance at this truck stopping for gas at Kauppi's in Mohawk. A quick snap of the Mavica captured the action. Somebody said this was Steve Brimm with the cool boots and the dogsled gear, but I never verified it. All I know, when I saw this picture of northwoods life, with a diminishing patch of snow on this overcast March day, I said, "This is a Pasty Cam shot".
Sometimes I could write a whole chapter about the single snapshot we have published each day over the past 8+ years. For this photo I would tell about Steve Brimm, who later became a Pasty.NET member, Pasty Cam contributor, and website creator (brimmages.com) among the family of domains we eventually would host. I could also mention that inside Kauppi's Konvenience store the clerk that day might well have been Deb Potter, who years later would anchor the order desk at Pasty Central. You should see Deb work, especially around holiday times, when she processes orders for thousands of pasties from all over the country. Back when the gas station shot appeared we were lucky to ship a few dozen pasties a week - a number which steadily snowballed over the years.
By the way, I could also write about how tough it is to run a business in such a remote area as the Copper Country, with Kauppi's out of business now the past couple of years. They closed about the same time The Hut in Kearsarge closed, which (as you may know), we're in the process of re-opening as a family restaurant, with a brand new pasty kitchen and drive-thru right next door. But that's another story.
