Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Wednesday, March 8, 2006 - 08:49 am:

When we first started the Pasty Cam in March of 1998, the physical location of our working area was in the basement office of our home in Eagle River. Our son Jonathan made the round trip every day on US 41 to Michigan Tech, and had some great opportunities along the way to capture interesting scenery with the new digital camera. We were still working on compression, dimensions, etc., and had not yet settled in to the regular look of the daily feature in the way it appears currently.

One issue which arose as we "archived" our first full week was the need for an overview of the previous 7 days. At first we created a little collage of all the shots, but later - when the first month was ready to be archived - we realize that separate thumb nails were needed anyway, so why not just use them for the weekly summary as well. The idea was so new, we still had a lot to learn. It would take awhile before we realized we were actually using recycled Internet...

Morning. Early bird?

By JanieT (Bobbysgirl) on Wednesday, March 8, 2006 - 09:00 am:

That building always made my hubby and I grin on our way up to the U.P. to snowmobile!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, March 8, 2006 - 09:12 am:

I recognize the building but can't remember where it is located.

By Rowdy (Roudymi) on Wednesday, March 8, 2006 - 09:20 am:

Right next to the second to the last place on Earth, or is it next to the next to the last place on Earth? I forget.

By happyooper (Trigal) on Wednesday, March 8, 2006 - 09:30 am:

We always called that store "The Open and Shut Store". It was the first store we've ever seen with the sign Shut instead of Closed. :)

By Margaret, Amarillo TX (Margaret) on Wednesday, March 8, 2006 - 09:31 am:

Mornin', love the paint job on the building. Sometimes one must be told where they are.

By Roy Beauchene (Royb) on Wednesday, March 8, 2006 - 10:24 am:

During my time, that place was a bar and it was called Ednas. When I was in Calumet High, we would drive down there and she would serve us beer.

The Pic in the collage of Lindels brought back many old memories of my growing up in Lake Linden. I worked there as a janitor during my high school years. Frank

So where is/was "The Last Place On Earth?" .....Charlie I'm thourghly (sp?) enjoying your pieces on the beginings of this marvelous site. I checked in the first time July "03 but seems it's been part of my daily life for much longer. I'm pleased with all my new friends and wonder about some that have kind of faded from the site. Anyone know what happened to the trucker from Oklahoma? And Mr. Wheatman? How about Dave from was it Laurium?

By Former Fulton Resident (Dashamo) on Wednesday, March 8, 2006 - 04:33 pm:

"The Last Place On Earth is on U.S.41 between Kearsarge and Allouez. Actually in a little burg called Phillipsville.

By JAD, Oscar, MI (Jandalq) on Wednesday, March 8, 2006 - 04:46 pm:

Drove by the Tech Trails this afternoon. Looks like a lot of folks are treking in to view the skiers at the Jr. Olympics. There are easy access points to walk in to view the racers. Wonder how the skiing was today with the high temperatures and melting?

I think the Last Place on Earth is just a short jaunt from the new location of pasty.com, The Hut.
And the Open/Shut sign is an old railroad track shift--whatever you call it. The proprietor is an accomplished artist--oils, pen and ink, watercolor.

Runnerlori, send some of those robins over my way,
I live in Waterford. Haven't seen a one.

By james f. haven (Technoido) on Wednesday, March 8, 2006 - 08:33 pm:

to royb, i hope you hear this, thanx for saying Edna's, you're
talking about one of my mothers friends. Edna was one of the
Phillipsville granddaughters, who were Edna, Bessie, and Winnie. I
have documentery evidence about how Winine was sweet on my
mothers uncle, who built the house I'm living in. I have heard of
other names for the bar, but thats the one I remember.
Edna has many stories attached to her, let's talk.
