We’re looking back at a Shoebox Memory that Charlie shared back in 2010 in both the photos and his notes about them.
Before it was known as Michigan Technological University, the Michigan School of Mines operated from 1885 to 1896, when it became Michigan College of Mines. Then in 1927 the formal name of Michigan College of Mining and Technology was established. Finally in 1963 the current name finally stuck.
Our thanks to the late Robert Wetton, Nick Bridges, and the late Keven Musser for passing along the old Shoebox Memories on this day.
What great old photos to look back on the history of Michigan Tech. Note in the first photo, it looks like the Quincy Mine buildings on the Ripley waterfront, were just being constructed. Interesting shots, indeed!
For a more current look at the Michigan Tech Campus, we’re joining Garry Kolb for a flyover of the campus from a year ago. Too bad we don’t have a flyover from back in the day to compare the differences.

Not to be picky, but
1. MTU was founded in 1885 as the Michigan Mining School. It was housed in the Houghton Fire Hall from 1886 through 1889.
2. The name was then changed to the Michigan College of Mines in 1897, and once again decided to change its name to the Michigan College of Mining and Technology in 1927.
3. If you blinked, you probably missed the fact that it's name was changed to the Michigan College of Science and Technology in the constitution of 1963. This name was initially approved by the Michigan House in December 1963. A student poll was taken, and although MCST was judged better than MCMT, it was hard to pronounce. The name was changed again later that month in the Michigan Senate (after MUT was rejected) at the request of Tech President J. Robert Van Pelt.
To wit:
4. As it appears in the Constitution of the State of Michigan, 1964:
Quote:
The institution established in the Upper Peninsula known as the Michigan College of Mining and Technology, referred to in the constitution of 1963 as the Michigan College of Science and Technology, is continued after January 1, 1964, under the name of Michigan Technological University, and shall be maintained for the purpose and under the regulations contained in this act.

Interesting pix, history lesson and the video is a beautiful view of Houghton. I had many rides on the Wing, on days like that with blue sky overhead, green lush forests on one side and sky-blue water on the other...it never got any better.
