Even with the frigid cold and windchill temperatures way below zero, Danielle Adams can't resist heading to the Marquette Harbor when she knows a boat is coming in. These pictures are of the Hon James L Oberstar coming into port this past Friday.

Danielle took these shots from Picnic Rocks Park in the chilly morning hours, thus the glow of the sun turning the boat and the "sea smoke" golden. That rising steam sure gives these shots a mystical feel!

Cool shots!! Nice job Danielle!

That sea smoke makes for some great pictures. I am sure it is a sign of cold fingers and feet. Thanks for seeking out the frigid beauty.

Thanks!! I loved how these turned out!!
No cold feet....but my fingers were beyond cold. At -8, it's just
a smidge cold!!

Hi
Unique and wonderful photos of a classic Lakes freighter. You made my morning.

Pretty pix...looks like this ship is off the coast of Port Austin, MI this morning.

The golden sunlight really does make the pictures.

Noticed that recently the term 'sea smoke' is used often on the news; seems back in the day it was just called fog. Must be a technical term?

Spectacular photos! It must be a cold job to work
on the big ships in the winter!

I remember going upstream on the St. Mary's River in such fog that you couldn't see the ship coming downstream but you could hear the sailors talking to each other. I was a deckhand on the E.L. RYERSON at the time, 1963.

Hi
jbuck, I got curious and found the following in Wikipedia:
"Sea smoke, frost smoke, or steam fog, is fog which is formed when very cold air moves over warmer water. It forms when a light wind of very cold air mixes with a shallow layer of saturated warm air immediately above the warmer water. It is usually not very high and lookouts on ships can usually see over it because the fog is confined to the layer of warm air above the sea. Because this type of fog requires very low air temperatures, it is uncommon in temperate climates, but is common in the Arctic and Antarctic."
