In case you aren't aware, some places here UP North get hit harder than others during winter storms. The Calumet area is one of those places and Joy Ziemnick gives us a taste of the clean-up that takes place both during the blustery weather and after.

That's her hubby, Jim out there on the tractor, all bundled up against the frigid temperatures and winds, blowing the snow out of the paths around their home. I asked Joy if he stays warm, since that photo of him all covered in white looks quite chilly to me, but she assured me that Jim stays toasty warm in his "snowsuit". Joy calls him her "Super Snow-man" and these photos show us why.

Joy also included a short video clip of the snow falling, you can even hear the birds in the background. This video wasn't taken during the same storm as the cleanup photos, if it had been, the only sounds you'd hear while watching, would be the howling wind. Click on the video to enjoy the snowfall.

Good for you, Jim!

It's still true ~ as long as you dress for it, you can handle the cold & wind!

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Friday, December 23, 2016 - 02:40 pm:

I show people here in SE Texas pictures of what a real winter is like and they respond with such things as "how do you live like that", or "how do you drive a car there", to the best one "you must be trapped all winter in your house; I couldn't handle that!" I tell them the same thing, that as long as you're dressed for it, you can handle anything Heikki Lunta (which they don't get either) throws at you.

Of course, I also have to remind them that it's very hard to wear flip-flops when there's 2 ft. of snow.... ;-)

You'll just have to show 'em how it's done; see the video:
(click →) "How to Turn Left in the UP" (YouTube video, 27 sec.)

This is northbound Bridge Street in Houghton, from approximately Douglass Street to Houghton Avenue (roughly two blocks/600 ft.).

Nice videos! Looks like Jim could handle a hazmat clean-up, as well.

By Greta Jones (Urbanescapees) on Friday, December 23, 2016 - 05:55 pm:

Snow - beautiful to look at, but such an inconvenience!

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Friday, December 23, 2016 - 07:24 pm:

Donna...just heard about a natural gas explosion near Baraga that's affecting heat in the area...hoping your house is not impacted.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Friday, December 23, 2016 - 07:41 pm:

I love these pictures! I will take snow over ice
any day!

By D. A. (Midwested) on Friday, December 23, 2016 - 07:50 pm:

Nice ride Jim.

Looks like Christmas day here in Moline, IL
will be pushing 50 degrees, which btw is the
world headquarters of John Deere.

Good news for my good friend from down here who
just left for Big Bay and a holiday week of
snowmobile play in the white stuff.

Loved the videos. Goes right along with what
people here call "The Michigan Left", seen a
lot in Detroit where you make a Right and then
a U-Turn.

By Donna (Donna) on Friday, December 23, 2016 - 08:56 pm:

Alex...what I've heard was a car went off the road
and hit something Semco, which caught Natural Gas on
fire and that was it...all over in L'Anse...affecting
that area...Baraga is good. Thank God...I talked w/a
friend that works at Shopko over there. MANY
folks/agencies involved that are getting and keeping
heat going and Semco is sending employees from
downstate to help with all the reconnects....it's
messy, but it's so beautiful to see the whole
community come together and fix it! <3 All WILL be
well! Thanks for checking!

Cool pix! I think I'd have to have an enclosed cab on that tractor if it were me, with/ heater, CD player and flask holder! lol

If all works out.... I think I have my pal Marty convinced we need a quick road trip to the Keweenaw next week for a quick tour and a Pasty! I'm hoping we can put this trip together, I need a break from work and I'll hideout for a couple days!

Merry Christmas Pasty Family!!

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Saturday, December 24, 2016 - 09:26 am:

Certainly a White Christmas 4 the Keweenaw. Merry Christmas.
